Hey guys, here's the situation...
My Maz 38 NR has got some issues. I checked the board to see if this issue had already been heard/solved, and although I found close, I'm not sure I found the exact same thing. (pardon if it's there and I missed it)
This thing likes to make loud popping/cracking noises, noises like darth vader breathing outward, and big (like 1/2) volume drops and leaps. I can usually hit it (literally) and it will stop. (for a little while) Then it comes back. It seems most reactive to a hit when I hit it on center depth at around the input jacks. It also likes to pop really loudly when switching off standby...as in powering down.
I've done many things now. I have started to convert it to a head, hoping that it was just vibrations that were causing the issue and that I may be able to thwart it somehow. (I just finished the dovetails and it's only pine, so it ain't pretty yet)
I just put in a brand new set of JJ's from Eurotubes. (granted, even tubes straight from the box can be bad I know) I thought that I may have got a couple microphonic pre's, so I grabbed a couple others and threw them in there. The problem persisted...perhaps not as prominent though. I will say that I'm not the best at judging tubes and that when a problem arises, I usually go for a "replace the tubes" method. (I've got about 40 power and 30 pre lying around (she is hungry for tubes...always))
I twisted and eliminated all the knobs to see if it was any of them. I make sure to spray PEC on the old tube pins and run them in and out of the socket to clean things up. The amp will make noises even with nothing plugged in (not guitar/pedals/cables)
Thoughts?
I couldn't get a great shot of it...it seems sporadic. However, hopefully these will help. These are pretty subdued compared to what it can/does do.
I absolutely love this amp and it's tone, but I'm about to go crazy!
I know what you're thinking...just don't hit the amp! HA! It happens regardless, I can just guarantee it this way.
This REALLY downplays the issue, but it was all I could get last night while the camera was on without waking the neighbors up again.
