does anyone know when Doc used GT EL84S as stock in the MAZ38NR? I have some JJ's in there now and just ran across a few sets of the GT 84's rated 6.. I am going to put them in and see if there is a difference but just curious as to when they were stock and why other than GT being bought by fender he switched brands... Mike

Not sure of when the switch took place but there was a drop in quality after Fender's acquisition as I recall.

I have a 2002 Maz 18R that came with them. I know they were used after that, but not sure how long. I think the change was due to reliability also, but can't say for sure. The originals were really nice tubes with lots of guts and without the upper mid spike in JJs. They also lasted a lot longer than JJs for me.

Yeah, I just dropped some in the MAZ, was going to change V1 with a NOS JAN/PHILLIPS but the stock tube sounds just as good so will leave it alone...however, the GT compared to the JJ's that were in it is a noticeable difference on several levels..as Marc said, lots of balls...less harsh...just a real nice sound....bass holds tight even crankin..overall made a noticable improvement in dynamics as well...got a few NOS Mullard GZ34's layin around as well will swap out the one in there and see how that does...I run a NOS Mullard GZ in a couple of my BF Fenders and again a noticeable improvement...as most MAZ owners have figured out the 38 has alot of teeth and alot of bottom end...I think these tubes work very well in those areas...will find out soon enough in a live situation..

My 2008 Maz18 had 'em when the amp was new , so they were used at least until then. I agree with Marc's comments too. I really liked 'em.

I used the #6 GTEL84's on Doc's recommendation til I couldn't get 'em anymore. Seems like around the time GT sold to Fender, the quality of the JJ's slipped.

My '05 Maz 38 probably had GT's originally, but I've always used JJ's, rated equivalent to GT #6, and never had a problem. I'm always interested to know what other guys are using instead though.

I know I was under a rock for a year and a half but back when I was buying lot of tubes (especially EL84's) I was told that the GTEL84S was the exact same thing as the JJ's from Eurotubes. www.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=view_products&category_id=3&sub_category_id=18I ordered many sets of them from Bob at Eurotubes. You just tell them you've got a Dr. Z and they send you their "5" or "6" rating equivalent (their rating scale goes to 20-something IIRC). I never had a problem with them. Lately I talked to Doc about it and he said that he started having reliability issues with the JJ/Teslas and switched to the EH's but now he's seeing the EH quality drop a little. He said that the situation is fluid...one day one set is more reliable and the next it might be the other brand. He of course has to stay on top of it. If (when) I need tubes in the future I'll probably still get some JJ's from Bob although I like the EH's too...they're just different. If Eurotubes/JJ lets me down I'll reassess at that point.

Yeah, I should have said above that the reason I started using JJ's was because I'd heard that GT's were basically selected JJ's, but more expensive. So get the JJ's from a reputable dealer who selects and burns in their tubes properly, and they should be fine. Eurotubes of course is one, but I get mine from Hot Rox here in the UK.
