I was just curious as to how you guys run your overdrives and other pedals on your board in what specific order. Im running my pedal board exactly like this----Guitar to buddah wha wha--> korg pitchblack tuner--> BB preamp--> lovepedal OD11-->analog man silvermod TS9-->xotic RC booster--> wampler faux analog echo--> Maz jr or EZG50 Do I have my OD's in the right order or should I change them up and run them from light to medium gain to heaviest gain? they sound good now to me, but Im wondering if a change up in OD order would make them sound better in the signal

As long as they sound good to you, there's nothing wrong with that order at all! You can always experiment...some pedals like to be pushed while others like to be pulled along by a boost.

I agree..
Experiment!

I agree with both Mark and Southmusic - if you like the way it sounds then just go with that. Personally, I like to put my boost after my OD so that I can get a little extra db boost if I need it.

I'm currently running Tuner>Rockett Chicken Soup>BB preamp>Delay... I love how the BB loves to be pushed...plus I have it slightly louder than the Soup so I can get a little boost if need be.

Agree with the above. I run : TU-3 tuner >Ego Compressor> Xotic AC > Xotic RC > Carbon Copy Delay> Maz. I have a BB , might try squeezing it in between the RC and CC delay.

For me....I have not used my board in a long time. But here is what I remember. Mista Fuzz or MJM Blues Devil OD then picture wah then HBE Phaser then Klon Centaur then Choral Flange and Swamp Thang trem. Tuner in there too somewhere.
Klon is set for boost. Fuzz or other OD set for drive/fuzz.

Wah>Tuner>Comp>Fuzz/OD (run from most gain to least gain)>Boost>Delay>Reverb. I'd like to run my comp after my drives, but my KoT HATES that setup. Super noisy.

I only have a couple OD's now (it's tough to whittle them down, but really who needs that many) but I have them set lighter OD's earlier in the chain and heavier OD's later. It's just easier for my mind to comprehend lighter-to-heavier, I guess.
But I should mention that I don't "stack" my OD's by running them at the same time. IF you do this, it will make a difference. When stacked, whichever simultaneously-on OD is last in the chain will be setting the overall/core tone; the OD(s) before it will really only be jacking up its drive content. Make sense? So, if you like stacking 'em, this would be the guiding principle as to which order they should be in.

My current setup for ODs, skipping stuff before and after, Barber Gain Changer (set for low) --> Keeley Red Dirt (set medium) --> FET Dream (toward the high gain) -- > Xotic SL (also set medium, but flavored differently than the Keeley). The Gain Changer set low seems to be a good front-end for each of the others, although I mostly use only one dirt box at a time. I probably could get by with just two, but I'm lazy and don't want to be squatting down by my board flipping switches and tweaking knobs during a gig.

I'm pretty traditional on effect placement: tuner (Korg) compressor (Barber) overdrive (Visual Sound) chorus (AnalogMan) phaser (EHX) delay (MXR) boost (Catalinbread)

Guitar>EQD Dream Crusher>Emerson EM-Drive>Fulltone OCD>EHX Soul Food>Boss TU-3>MXR Micro Chorus>Boss TR-2>MXR Carbon Copy>Maz 38
My OCD is my main dirt right now and stays on almost all the time. I run it with the gain all the way down. I use the EM-Drive to goose my OCD for more overdrive, and I use the Soul Food as my clean boost for solos and such. The Dream Crusher, since it's like a modded fuzz face, it likes to be first.
If you like how your chain sounds then leave it. It's fun though to take an hour or so and switch your OD pedals around and see what you like best. Sometimes you get some cool flavors by experimenting with them and you really get to know your pedals better that way.

I agree…..if they sound good, leave em alone.
I'm running a Soul Food set for a mostly clean boost into a BB Pre (set for moderate OD) into a clean Ghia.

turbo tuner>WOF wah>Zendrive>Honey beest>Trifecta> Moon phaser> seraph chorus>ML2> Cusack TAW> Remedy. The "right" way is the way that sounds good to your ears. Sometimes I switch positions of my fuzz/OD just to remind myself of the difference... same with tremolo and delay. Pedals and amps speak. I do my best to listen.

I run 2 dirt pedals & put OD first then distortion - I don't stack them. Tried both ways and order makes no difference
I also like to run tuner first - figure best signal and easy stomp to mute rig.

So, if you like stacking 'em, this would be the guiding principle as to which order they should be in. This is the basic guide line. Do you want your Drive Boosted? Or would you prefer your Drive to have more sustain? In my case I am putting my Zvex Fuzz Factory>Skreddy Screwdriver ( obviously different than a RC Boost and BB Preamp ) But I can have the Skreddy on and if I need more sustain I can click on the Fuzz... Now the Skreddy set the overall Volume and basic tonality of the situation BUT the Fuzz pushes the overdrive and sustain. It would be the same with a cranked Booster in front pushing it into more sustain and distortion but not volume. Of course if you want more volume with basically the same tone put a booster after a drive pedal to get the ' More just louder ' sound. have fun

Try a really clean boost like a flying dragon at the very end of your chain and prepare to be amazed! My order is: TU2 tuner Teese wah Rockett blue note OD Rockett Animal OD (plexi) Skreddy Lunar Module OD/fuzz Carl Martin AC tone OD ernie Ball buffered volume pedal Love pedal baby trem TC Electronics Alter Ego delay earthquaker Devices dispatch master delay/reverb lizard leg draconis dual clean boost

If I'm gonna have multiples on at one time, it's gonna be a sort-of-but-not-totally-clean boost (A/M Bad Bob Boost) up front, pushing the front of my other OD's. The last pedal on my board is also a true clean boost (Cusack More Louder) in order to get the "same, only louder" sound. Trying to have my cake and eat it, too!

Would you run your boost after delay? I was always told delay should always be last. Also would you run over drives by gain? IE: light then medium then heaviest? Or doesn't it matter?

It kind of just depends on what sound you want, but from my experience, if you want a true clean boost, place your clean boost at the very very end. If you put it before your delay, it'll just drive your delay a little which you might like, but if you want your delay repeats to be as natural as possible, place your boost after delay.

^^^^^agreed...
As for the order of OD's, just experiment for tonal compatibility.

I have my BB preamp before my love pedal OD11, my OD11 is my mostly stay on all th eitme pedal and sounds great, and when I want a real kick in boost Ill press the BB preamp and together they sound huge and great. But, why is it when I just use the BB preamp, does the sound get real thin and volume dramatically decreases and it sounds like crap, yet when I use the OD11 then use the BB on top of it, its huge and thick and jumps way up in volume? maybe change the order of pedals?

You can try to change the order...the BB is a brighter sounding pedal in my opinion...I have mine placed after my Chicken Soup, which I am using for my main OD...the BB is more of my boost or for cutting through as it has more mid range hump. With both on, I get the same results...fat, thick tones...mmmm.

It sounds to me as if you have set the BB to do just what you want to the OD11 - give it a kick and a lift - which would explain why the BB on its own has a totally different sound and tone. If you leave the OD11 on all the time, then leave the BB where it is, and enjoy! If, however, you want to run the BB on its own, you'll need to dial it in as a "solo" pedal, which will change the dynamics completely with the OD11. Stacking pedals is a real art form, IMHO, and takes time, effort and and lots of experimentation. For me, the only stacking I tend to do is with a Clean Boost goosing an OD pedal at some point, but even that is rare for me. Others LOVE stacking pedals, so listen to them - Mark N in particular - who seems to have become the Dirt Pedal Stacking guru for many of us

Im going to try Mark's theory and swap the BB with the OD and see what happens. Im actually going to try and run all my OD's from light to highest gain, so my new order im going to try is OD11, analogmanTS9 silvermod, BB preamp, Xotic RC boost. and Im thinking Ill have the OD 11 and the clean of the amp in unity in volume, so when the amp is clean and at the right level and I hit the OD11, it will still be the same volume but just give me the light hair Im looking for for rythm tones, and tghen set the TS9 a little higher but not by far in volume, then the BB preamp up to cut through for solos. Thats my theory, now to see if it will actually work lol. I leave the xotic RC on all the time as its my clean boost and really thickens my tone. and if it doesnt work out how I planned, I can always go back to current setup

I do the standard thing, too--tuner>OD>dist>fuzz>clean boost>mod effects>time effects, so typically the dirt pedals are arranged from low to high gain. No particular advantage to doing it that way--it just seems logical and if I wanted to stack I could. Typically I use at least a couple of different dirt flavors and then a Flying Dragon or other clean/dirty boost for solos--though at this point I could just as easily lose the boost and use my guitar volume. The boost is nice for that extra push, though, when the drummer's really laying into it and your other guitar player's noodling when you're trying to solo.

If it aint broke, dont fix it. This rings true as I tried to rearrange my pedals and try different stacking methods of running low to high gain and I came full circle back to my original set up of having the BB preamp first in line as it sounds HUGE there in front of the OD11 and TS9. the BB sound like crap on its own but stacked on top of my OD11 or TS9 it is absolutley killer, thick and big tone. I need to learn to leave well enough alone.
