Drove up to Cleveland this morning to pickup my new (to me) Stangray head from a forum member...in GREEN even! Fired it up with the Creamback M in the openback cabinet below. Sounds great. In fact, it sounds better than I remember from my 'ray combo I sold a few years ago (1x12 w gold). Of course, I'm bedroom airbraking it....but the popping dynamics of the ef86 are fun to play with. I won't be able to try it out on a gig until next month, but I'm really hopeful the 97db creamback will make it more usable than the 100db gold. For the country band, this will be my new 'big rig'.

I know the Ray is supposed to be Voxish but that surf green just seems to be made for the Ray (and the Z-verb). Cool setup, I have that same cab with a Gold. Enjoy.

I love it.. Allows me to turn up a little more, doesn't make the sound man mad and I can hear my amp better because the sound disperses better. It also lets me put myself in the mains a little more for a more even mix.

Congrats John, welcome back to the Ray family. Seems like you have been pining for Ray since you sold yours. I hope that it works well for you with that less efficient G12M-65 Creamback. As a matter of fact, I just picked up a G12M-65 last night in hopes that I will be able to turn up the Ray a little bit more; maybe even get it on 2 or 3. I have not installed it yet as I am in the middle of tube swapping. I am also considering getting a plexi shield for my rig to reduce hot spots on stage. Btw, there is a sea foam green Z verb for sale on the seattle craigslist; no affiliation.

Btw, there is a sea foam green Z verb for sale on the seattle craigslist; no affiliation. That's mine. At this point I'm only interested in selling it locally so I have not advertised it on the forum yet even though I have all of the original packaging. Too many issues associated with shipping verb units and having them not arrive operational. Since I sold all of my non reverb Z's in the last 6 months except for the Z-28 and my only other amp (the EZG) has wonderful onboard reverb, I figured I couldn't really justify keeping the Z-verb just for the Z-28. I'll continue to use the Z-verb at home with both amps until it sells (or doesn't).

Hey Ridgeback, I didn't mean to mess with your selling strategy or anything. I remember seeing your Z Verb and thought that it would look excellent on John's new Stang Ray.

Good for you, John. I too recall you sounding like you had a healthy dose of seller's remorse from your previous Ray. I share that feeling. I had a 2 x 12 combo with 2 blues. Probably the best clean amp I've ever owned including my BFTR's. Just like the twins tho, too heavy for me.. I think you've struck upon a great combination: Ray head and 1 x 12 /Creamback. I hope it works out well!!!! Congrats!
PS: DIG the Surf Green!!!!

I hope it works out well!!!! Congrats! PS: DIG the Surf Green!!!! Only upon the issue of the Creamback did I have seller's remorse. (I sold the 'ray way before the Creamback was available.) It's been my feeling that anything in the greenback camp (greenbacks, greenback clones and Creamback M) share and awful lot of tone with Blues and golds. But at the time I had the 'ray, there were none of the high powered greenback-ish speakers out there. (Except the Private Jack from Eminence...and that's another loud speaker) So to have a 97db greenback-ish speaker was just what I wanted. And besides, the greenback tone is my favorite of all time anyway. At bedroom airbrake level, it did seem a little bass heavy...I had the tone down to 10:00. But stage volume could be a completely different story. I remember playing my first gig with the 'ray combo here: With this rig (Gold speaker): Since it was a big outdoor stage, I figured I could blast away at full power without any problem, but I brought the airbrake just in case. A song or two in, I felt I was TOO LOUD. I had to come down a click or two. I have to go to Home Depot this morning for a garbage disposal, I'll be looking at clear plexi sheets to try to build my own.

Hey Ridgeback, I didn't mean to mess with your selling strategy or anything. I remember seeing your Z Verb and thought that it would look excellent on John's new Stang Ray. No worries mate. If I were willing to ship, I could have sold it months ago. Frankly, I'm just not in any rush to sell it. It would look and sound great with John's Ray however.

Welcome back John and glad to see your post. Nice looking color scheme too. You'll have to let us know what you think about the creamback and ray at a good level.

John, Just caught this thread. Congrats on your new acquisition. Was waiting to see when you were finally gonna get yourself back to the Stang Ray cheers always, eh Joel Yeah, I kept going back and forth...should I or shouldn't I... It also didn't hurt that I could drive to pick it up. That saved on shipping. And when the green one showed up, close by....I figured I'll keep it as long as I'm in this country band. I'm not a huge accumulator of musical equipment. If I buy it...it usually means I'll use it. (and hopefully make some money at it) But something like this was pure 'extra'. (Let's face it, I've got the bases covered with a Remedy and Ghia 1x10 combo.) My wife knows I'm not wasteful or excessive when it comes to owning gear, and she's always given me 'blank check' privileges for any piece of music gear I've wanted. I txt'd her the day the amp came up for sale, saying I wanted to talk to her about a 'musical purchase' that evening. She just txt'd back: GO BUY IT! She didn't know what it was, or how much it cost. She's a keeper!!
