I know this may seem like an ignorant question, but I really don't know:( I just replaced all the pre-amp tubes & rectifier tube in my 6545 and totally forgot to get a balanced tube for the PI. Here is what I ended up with:
V1: Tung Sol 12ax7 (New reissue) V2: Tung Sol 12ax7 V3: NOS RFT EF86 V4: Tung Sol 12ax7 V5 & 6 Power Tubes: Stock GT-E34LS V7: JJ / Tesla GZ34 / 5AR4
I will say, the Tung Sol's really sound great. Very punchy, tight & touch sensitive. I was concerned about all the issue's with the 12ax7m's & went with these instead. I forgot & did not order a balanced one for V4, but the amp sounds so much better? Will this hurt anything? Also, I picked up the RFT NOS EF86 (W. Germany branded AMC) as it was affordable over the other NOS EF86's out there and this sucker really pulled the wet rag off the 45 side! I now have bigger bottom end, sweeter mids & a really lush top end. sort of more crunchy...I got so excited over how much of a difference a NOS EF86's made over the stock one, I just ordered a NOS Mullard as well as a NOS Telefunken! So much for saving money! The RFT sounds amazing though...

You should ask Myles. He'll probably go tech on you. But from what I remember him saying...it won't hurt anything.

If I'm not mistaken, not using a balanced PI tube can lead to some notes sounding dull/lacking sustain on your guitar. A balanced PI tube makes sure that doesn't happen.

a balanced PI is important because each tube gets equal signal in tube amps (except true class A- which are very unusual- not ac30's 15's matchless etc- not true class a) the balance lets each tube get equal signal- or near the tubes act in push pull- the signal is quickly moving from one tube to another- with balance pi you should get more even frequency response- less flat spots am i right? please correct me if not

Since Myles hasnt responded, I'll take a stab at this... A 12A** style tube is a "two sided" tube...or like 2 tubes in one...I forget the correct terminology for it. Anyway, in the preamp stages, only one side of the tube is used so no need for matching. In the Phase Inverter spot, both sides of the tube are used so having both sides of the tube matched leads to more consistent/better tone.

On my GAB website I have a lot of detailed info on this subject.

Thanks to all for the info! I now have a really silly question...I ordered a balanced Tung Sol 12ax7, which should arrive in the next few days. Can someone be kind enough to tell me which spot is V4 (PI) on a 6545 if i'm looking at the back of the amp? Thanks!

Myles says 90+% of the time, it's the tube closest to the power tubes.
