I had the RXES for a while and had a love/hate thing going on. Actually, I never hated it but I thought it got kind of boring next to some other amps. I kept it because when I needed that vox-fender sound in one, this did it. I never used the boost though and thought that it was only useful as an actual boost. I was wrong, the boost makes this amp come alive. It does something to the mids and smooths everything out. I find it had to think its just a 3db boost. Is there anything else going on inside?

I think the boost utilizes the second triode of the EF86 tube, while the boost is off, that triode is basically unused. So maybe what you like is the sound of that EF86 tube. Someone can correct me if I wrong though.
I also love the sound with the boost on.

I have the Junior Strength and I keep the boost on and use the guitar vol and a KoT. GLORIUS!!!! (Angels start to sing heah!)
I must say though that with the simple amp controls it took me a while to get it fine tuned and figure it out. The Bass control on the amp is rarely if ever about 9:00. I start with Bass 8:00, Mid and Treb at 12:00 then dial it all in. If I had the bass at 12:00 to start it made it harder to tweak the Mid and Treb so I start with it low... But that's me.

Ah ok. I still could've sworn I had read somewhere that the second half of the tube kicks in when the boost is switched on. Wonder if it was the 12ax7 instead? Maybe I dreamed it because I can't find where I got that info from now. Edit: found something from none other than Z himself about the boost. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/21826Seems the boost changes the gain of the EF86 tube.
