New Sensor, our good friend Mike Mathews owns the Svetlana name and rights. I buy mine threw New Sensor, I believe they sell online to the public.
These are differant then the Sovtek 12AX7 EH, I had fears that they were the same tube just re-labeled by Mike, but no they are Svet's. Great quality and seem to work very nice in some Z's at a very reasonable price.
Happy Swapping DR.Z

Hope you don't mind me tagging on here.
Hey Dr. What are your thoughts on the Ei Elites? How do the Svets compare to them?
I like the Ei's and have good luck with them, but they are kind of hard to find.

Hope you don't mind me tagging on here. Hey Dr. What are your thoughts on the Ei Elites? How do the Svets compare to them? I like the Ei's and have good luck with them, but they are kind of hard to find. I love the Ei 12AX7 tubes of old, they were hands down the best sounding pre-amp tubes. But they changed the internal design of the tube and they all became extremely microphonic. There is some old stories about Ei buying and using old Telefunkin tooling and machines to make the Ei 12AX7, and that the tooling was wore out leaving sizing differances that caused the microphonic condition. Now I see the Ei Elites which are reported to be better more like Ei of old, I'll need to test them before I comment on them , I hope it is true that they hold up and sound full and warm as old ones. What is your luck with them ? DR.Z

I have had just as good luck with the Ei's as any other brand I have bought. I don't crank the amp for distortion though.. I like a big, clean sound and add a pedal, so maybe that helps them from shaking up and becoming micro.
I like the Gold Pins in my Fender based amp and regular Ei Elites in my Z's, V-1 and V-2. Trouble is, they are becoming harder to find. I think the bad reputation they had because of the earlier tubes hurt them, long term.
Have you tried the new JJ EC803?

I play a AM Deluxe Tele thru a Maz18 and love the amp, although this tube swap could be exactly what I need. I am not able to have the cut much above 9 o'clock or things get to peircing and harsh on the top side. Its not bad at a lower volume, but at rehearsal or stage volumes I have to cut it and pull the treble back to around 10 oclock. Just thought I would share! Thanks for the info, I look forward to giving it a try.

I'm interested in making the change in my MAZ Jr. as described in the Doc's "Third Whatever", but alas, I am a tube newby. I want to replace the ECC-83's in V1 and V2, but am not sure whether I need -- or is it desirable to have -- a matched pair of Svetlana 12ax7's for this replacement. Any help is appreciated.
Also, any idea whether the quality of the Svetlana's differs fom vendor to vendor?? For example, Zzounds.com sells them, but are they the same quality as I'd get directly from New Sensor (I don't really want to spend $75 if I don't have to -- that's the mnimum order via the New Sensor site)? Thanks for any help.

I've tried the JJ ECC-803 and liked it much more than the ECC-83. It's fatter and smoother on the high end, and doesn't have that harsh mid peak that the ECC-83 does.

KC,
quality is going to be the same. I just purchase 3 from ZZ. One is on back order, so I'm going to wait on putting them in until I get the one on back order. The DR mentioned that it sounds better with all three.
KC, is your JR nr or verb?

guitarboy02451,
My MAZ Jr has reverb. If I remember correctly, the Doc suggested replacing V1 and V2 in the reverb model as a way to get a less harsh tone.
Yup, here it is: Now on the reverb models I left the 12AX7 LPS in the PI ( V5) because I liked the articulation it gave the reverb amps , but used the Svets in V1 and V2 for added warmth and less harsh responce.

KC, cool.. I ordered three from ZZounds for my Sr. NR. Two came in but the third is on back order. I'm going to wait to put all three in. Change out the two JJ's and replace the Sovetek. Here is the scoop on Svetlana's: www.wingedc.com"Because of a change in ownership of the former American distributor, JSC Svetlana recently lost its ability to sell vacuum tubes bearing the "Svetlana" name, while maintaining the ability to sell the tubes bearing the logo in the United States and Canada. The Xpo-pul factory (formerly part of Reflector) in Saratov, Russia is an entirely different Russian company that makes vacuum tubes for an American corporation that controls the Sovtek and Electro-Harmonix brand names. This same American corporation now also owns and controls the Svetlana brand name in the United States and Canada and recently introduced a line of Svetlana branded vacuum tubes produced in the Xpo-pul factory. The Xpo-pul factory "Svetlana" tubes are not the same Svetlana tubes that you have been accustomed to over the years!"

Dr. Z gave me this idea for my Carmen Ghia: in the preamp, I've got an Ei 12AX7 and a 5751 (can't read the label beyond that anymore- it used to have green script and that's all I can tell)... From straining to remember, he told me that one of the tubes had better headroom and the other better breakup, so using them together was a cool solution...

So has anyone bought some of the New Sensor Svetlana tubes? If so, how do you like them?
