Hello all,
Firstly, I'm sorry for asking a question that has been brought up before but I'm afraid my ignorance with speakers is hindering me from making an informed choice..
The problem I'm having is that, when pairing my Maz38 Head with my 1x12 cab that has a celestion V30, I'm getting a very piercing sound. To make it playable at all I need the cut under 9 o'clock or off altogether...
I used a buddy of mines 2x12 cab with other speakers (they weren't celestions, they were wharfdales I think) and it was a totally different sound so I figure I need to get a new speaker that isn't as piercing.
I've read a few other threads and what people were recommending were celestion G12H30's but there's loads of different versions of them! There's the straight heritage version, an anniversary edition, a G12H30-55 and a G12H30-75 by my count so far..
So I'm very confused! Could anyone shed some light on what one I should go for if I want to lessen the piercing sound I'm getting from my current setup?
Really really appreciate any help here!
Thanks, Leon

Welcome to the forum, great amp you have there! Yes there has indeed been much discussion about the best speaker for the Maz 38, and having tried the usual ones I may be able to help. My first speaker in a 1x12 cab with my own Maz 38 w/verb head was the V30. When I first got it I was very disappointed, as to me it sounded quite characterless, and with too much upper mids....most call it a spike. As you say, too piercing. However, after gigging extensively with it, the speaker began to smooth out, and eventually I really liked it. I also tried the G12H30 70th Anniversary, which is, I believe, the stock speaker in the Maz combo. It's really nice, more balanced than the V30, though I will say the V30 cuts through really well in a gig situation. These days I prefer the Celestion Alnico Gold, expensive but worth it in my opinion. The bass is not as tight as the V30, but it definitely sounds more three dimensional and harmonically rich. Strange, as the first one of those I had didn't do it for me, but then I bought a second one which sounded much better. I also have a Z 2x10 cab which sounds great with the Maz. Anyway, that's just my experience, but you may find the following link helpful, as there is a section on speaker choices further down the page: www.humbuckermusic.com/dr-z-maz-buyers-guide.htmlGood luck!

Wow thanks for the info and the link Mickey! Never spotted the page before and it looks like it's got lots of good info in it Good to know that the G12H30 70th Anniversary is the stock speaker so that's probably the G12H30 option I should be trying out. I was considering the gold too but was worried that it might not cure the piercing problem.. If you think it will then it might be worth the extra cash! Again, forgive the ignorance but is this the correct celestion gold you're talking about? www.thomann.de/ie/celestion_alnico_gold_bulldog_12_8_ohm.htmI only ask because it says "bulldog" on it Leon

Hi is your V30 broken in or new? Some folks get rid of them before they're properly seasoned. It is a speaker that will cut though the mix live. Just asking.

You are very welcome, but you'll have to forgive my own ignorance, as although it looks right I've never seen it referred to as a Bulldog before. As far as I know, there's only one Gold, but it's probably worth an email to Thomann to check it's the same one. Whether it'll do what you want is a difficult one to answer, as the Gold is quite a chimey speaker. I don't hear that as piercing, but you might...we all hear things according to our own perspective. here's another link which may help, or not!..... www.watfordvalves.com/soundfactory.aspThere are lots of sound clips on the net, check out Youtube. Have fun!

Thanks again for the replies!
I'll email Thomann for sure to see if they're the Celestion golds or not. They probably are but it'd be nice to be sure before I drop 250 euros on it
I don't mind the chimey-ness of blues for example but I *think* what I'm hearing that's piercing with the V30s are the upper mids. I *think* so at least but I have to educate myself on it more. I might get the G12H30 70th Anniversary speakers to try out for now and maybe take the plunge for the golds later if I've some spare cash.
strat59, I've had the V30 in my cab for a good 2 years at this stage and I play pretty regularly so I assume they're broken in by now.. Thanks again for the info and the links! I'll report back how I get on when I decide what speaker to get. G12H30 sounds safe so far but "3 dimensional" sounding for the Golds almost sounds too good to pass up! Leon

Just wanted to say that I've ordered a G12H30 70th anniversary speaker so I'll let ye know how I get on with it!
Thanks again for all the help here. I have a 2x12 too so I think I'll get a gold when I have some more cash and will try out some different configurations with my 2 cabs.
Thanks again! Leon

Just a quick update in case anyone is interested, I used the new speaker over a few gigs last weekend and it has definitely made some change in the overall sound. It still sounds pretty bright but less so and I suppose as the speaker gets broken in a bit more that brightness will probably reduce too.
All in all, thanks everyone for the help here! Very interesting learning experience

Hello again,
Don't mean to keep bumping this thread but I wanted to share something that's probably fairly obvious to others but wasn't to me and made a huge difference to my setup.
So I changed the speaker in my 1x12 cab and it did make a difference but still needed to be played in before I made a full judgement on it. It still sounded bright however and that was still bothering me.
After watching some instructional videos and watching a few amazing guitar players around my part I realised that they all had one thing in common. They were cranking the amp up to a crazy volume (louder than I had ever set it to) and then controlling the difference between rhythm volume and lead volume with the volume pot on their guitar.
Again, probably obvious to a lot of people on here but I gotta say, with the Maz set up this way it just sings!! I've dropped about 4 pedals due to this discovery and it has solved all of my brightness issues so I thought I'd share it here.
Again, thanks for the help here too!

Partial to the RedFang....used it in my MAZ 1-12...also liked the Tonker.....I totally understand the speaker making the end result that said the MAZ is flexible enough to sound good thru just about anything....you could cut the treble, up the mids some and up the cut....I just had the one I have now adjusted a bit to be easier on the bass end...as a rule the older MAZ, mine is 2008 my first was a 2006 could be really heavy handed on the bass end...so I had that backed off some...a few upgrades to newer components...no bypass,I like the way it sounds as is...I also don;t bother to even look at the controls, I just turn the knob to where ever it sounds good and thats about it...sometimes its crazy...roll the mids to 0,max the treble and bass....use cut as needed...different sorta sound...this amp can do about anything that I have ever needed it to do, from guitar to bass to acoustic to steel guitar to, well you get the picture....It took a while but I can dial this amp into anything speaker wise and get a good sound out of it...anything....sounds killer thru a 15" speaker cab as well/..my current config is the MAZ38NR and Z 4-10....that will change at some point to 2-12, or 2-10 or a 15 whatever its all good...this amp is deceptively simple...small adjustments do large things..simple changes result in complex tones...short of the speaker being blownout your MAZ should be able to adapt to anything out there...we all have our favs though, and I learned this...no speaker is everything to everybody...once I got that I quit chasing speakers....let the amp do what it does best...make me sound better than I actually am....with any speaker that happens to be available the MAZ can chameleon its way into making it sound like it was made just for that amp....
