Hello Z-FREAKS!!
I'm about to dive back in to the world of Dr. Z's. A few years ago I went Z crazy. I have previously owned a Ghia, Maz 18, Maz 18NR, Stingray (yes, an original stingray head). So I have a lil Z experience.
Anyways, I'm looking at this M12 and I'm reading posts about overall volume level. I play in a trio with a bassist and drummer. We love fuzz tones and modulation effects. The M12 sounds like the right beast. My only concern is sometimes we can get heavy (think older incubus not slayer). Will this amp be loud enough to compete with a somewhat heavy handed drummer, and a bassist playing out of an Ampeg 8x10 during rehearsal where I am not mic'd?
From my forum diving I have found that in order to get most volume out of the M12, and any amp for that matter, it should be paired with a ZBest cab and speakers with a 100db rating.
I'd like feedback from some forum members who are actively using M12's in rehearsal situation without a PA.
Your thoughts?

I should've also said that I would need some cleans. Maybe the Z28 would be a better option for me.

The M12 is a mean clean machine... just add pedals when you need em! Yes go with an efficient speaker rig. I have gigged it in a 5 piece without a mic and on some bigger stages where it was mic'd but it was plenty loud where it didn't need to be the monitors and it was about 8' behind me on the floor in a 1x10.

With an efficient speaker it is plenty loud IMO. One thing it does is retain clean headroom at higher volume knob settings.

Yes it'll hang. I have another thread on here about a large 2500 seat auditorium I played at and I had plenty of volume to spare, and cleans when using the M12 and my Z-Best cab.
Beyond that, it sounds amazing.

I've played quite a few outdoors gigs w/ mine. M12 + Dr Z 1 x 12 Cab Celestion Gold. Plenty of punch....

Awesome! Thanks for the quick responses guys! My business partner and I were talking Z's most of the day in the shop. I'm looking to purchase an amp in about a month so I'm just diving in deep into the lower watt and budget friendlier amps in Z land. I'm considering the Ghia, M12, Z28 and Route 66.
I'm glad to know that the M12 will hold up. I really like the demo's I've heard of if. But then again I haven't heard a Z I didn't like. I guess we'll just have to collect them all! I have some time to decide while I get my scratch together.
Thanks again folks!

I need to figure out what you guys are doing to be able to run the m12 and not mic it. I recently bought another M12 and really enjoy the amp and sound guys love me. I have a combo loaded with a gold. Unless its mic'd up its not loud enough to be heard on stage in average size bars. Last night I was on HI, vol wide open, bass on 3 and treble on 9:30ish. I keep the treble down with my tele or it gets a bit to bright. Oddly enough the PRRI I used to have with a single 10 is much louder.
Gotta figure out the trick here, love the sound but hate having to use a floor monitor to hear myself. I might try putting it on a stand next gig pointed right at my head.
ps. I found a really cheap pedal that sounds amazing with the M12. The Joyo AC tone. 90% of the time I run wamplers but for a lark I tried this $30 pedal that was collecting dust and was amazed how it sounded with the M12. It pretty much sucked with other amps I tried it with. Now I'm wondering what the new wampler 30 something would sound like...But I digress.

If you need more volume, simply add a clean boost pedal like the lizard leg flying dragon or the 2 channel version called a draconis to your rig (i run mine at the end of my chain). I run my M12 on the low setting and the volume at about noon through a 1x12 with a gold. bass and treble are also near the noon position. when i have the clean boost on a bit above unity and then hit an OD pedal i can get a ton of volume out of the M12...i mean volume to spare!

I've just added a 210 cab to my 110 combo thanks to a y cable through the nice folks at pro cables n sound. Sounds pretty loud. I've used the combo on its own at practices with a very loud drummer and it only just kept up. I was having to tame the volume because it was feeding back with overdrive. This was more likely due to the speaker config than the amp. I've often wondered if the dr will release a higher powered m12? I know some of the amps are similar but not quite the same. I think it would be very popular.

Thx, Jefferson, I just so happen to have a Flying Dragon boost somewhere around here. I'll give it a try with your settings at this weekends gig.

Been wanting to buy another z but I basically want a higher powered m12. Hear the z28 is probably closest. Have tried the maz18 jr but didn't sound like the m12 at all no matter how much I adjusted the settings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The M12 does sound great, but not a loud amp......that's why a lot of guys like it. You can turn it up to the sweet spot and be at a reasonable volume. Not something I would want to compete with big bass rigs and pounding drummers.......I use it when I play next to an acoustic piano and with a soft drummer behind a shield. Good luck !

Its not a loud amp, just a really good sounding one!
