Hi - So I bought a used Remedy about 2 months ago and it rocks - no problems thru the Z-Best or a 10" Red Fang (both 8 ohms). So I plugged it in to a 4 ohm Avatar cab loaded with 4 - 4 ohm Celestions and within 15 minutes it loses volume. The heat coming off the tubes thru the top of the amp was very noticeable. I shut it off for an hour, plug it back in and it's fine - but I didn't have time to play it for another 15+ minutes.
I know I need to check it out tomorrow thru the Z-Best but has anyone had an issue like this with a 4 ohm cab or is it just time for a retube like on my Z-28?
Thanks - Al Z.

It would have been useful to have an eye on the power tubes, as it sounds like maybe one was red-plating or something. The amp shouldn't perform any differently with a 4 ohm load as it does with 8 or 16, as long as you are using the right output jack. Time for some troubleshooting - keep your eyes and ears open, and if you see red-plating, shut it down and start thinking on a new set of power tubes.

Forgive the obvious question, but when you changed from an 8 Ohm cab to a 4 Ohm cab, did you switch the speaker cable from the 8 Ohm output to the 4 Ohm output okay? 8 Ohm output into a 4 Ohm cab = not good

Hey Pete - It's an obvious question but those are the ones to ask. Yup - It was changed to the 4 ohm output. And I didn't see anything happening with the tubes either. They just got hot and it lost volume.
I have some time tonight to plug it in the Z-Best and I'll also order a set of JJ's today. I saw that Antique Electronic Supply has the set for $85. Anyone have issues with these guys? Other vendors are more $$. I don't think anyone in Cleveland has a set.

To piggyback on a previous question, are you certain the cab is wired correctly to 4 ohms?

About Antique Electronic Supply : They're good guys , I've bought from them a number of times and no problems FWIW.

I had someone check the cab and it was @ 4ohms.

New tubes never hurt

So I played thru the 8 ohm cab last night and today - no loss in volume at all. I think I'll order some new tubes and stay away from that 4 ohm cab. It's my bandmates and I was using it until the Z-28 got retubed. We'll see how the gig goes tonight.

I don't want to second-guess the person who checked your cab, but from what you're describing I have to wonder if its impedance really is what it's supposed to be.,
