I always debate trading or selling my RXES for a Ray but when I play the RXES I like it a lot. One thing that I cant figure out is the mid range though. I have a hard time dialing it in. The mids sound hollow to me but I think that is the EF86 working in the tonstack recovery V2. I also talked to a former Z tech about changing the tonestack on the RXES because of this reason. I dont really know what I am asking here but has anyone else noticed the weird mids in the rxes?
In my head, the Stang Ray is just like the rxes but more bright and maybe a rounder bottom end with a scooped and cleaner mid range. Its also a bit more aggressive in the upper mids but I think thats due to the drop in the lower mids. Almost the same amp while still being different.

What speaker are you using with your RXES?
I didn't kind mine scooped at all really; I usually used a Z 1x12 Gold w/ either a 335 or Tele (Fralin in neck, Broadcaster in bridge).

I use a wreck cab with a gold/g12h30 now. I have used a gold/blue, blue/blue, and gold/gold.
I dont think the rxes is scooped. I think the mids are a bit hollow meaning actually hollow sounding (of thats possible). Yes I swapped and rolled tubes.

My Tele can get that way at times if I'm not pushing the front end of the amp hard enough. Even my Z-28 could get like that.

Seems like an EF86 thing then.

Perhaps. Which EF86 are you running in there? I found the Dario pretty hi-fi but the Tesla (or Winged C?) was warmer. That said, the differences were really subtle to my ear.
Can you post clips? Where are you setting your EQ and what guitar sounds most hollow?
I also found the RxES got brighter and thinner with worn output tubes.

All new tubes and tried many tubes. I have a NOS ef86 but just bought more to try. I need some time to make a new clip (in the process of moving). I got a winged C from Z when I met with him at his factory but it was microphonic.

I tried a TUng Sol in V1 but liked the JJ better. Lately I have liked the Tung SOl in my ac30 so I thought the RXES could benefit but it lost some lows and tamed highs which are the 2 things I liked about the RXES.
I think V2 has the most effect on the sound from the amp. Its the ef86 in this amp and I just ordered 2 NOS ef86's so I will see what happens when I put them in.

i got an ES today and had to fool around with tone stack quite a bit before i bumped the mid up to 8+ (bass at 1, mid at 8+, treble at 3). no hollow mids at that point- sounds good to me
this is with a creamback M and my lollar scfh pups.

I think it's the ef86 sound that I hear. The rxes is my favorite z amp bc it can do so much. I traded mine for a plexi but I want to get another.

I was playing mine, which is fairly new to me, yesterday using a Tele into a Creamback in a closed-back cab. I was doing a lot of British Invasion tunes and really liking the sound. Having read your earlier post, I did listen a little for the effect you mentioned. It seemed to me that there was a slight dip or reticence in the upper mids. It might be described as "hollow" sounding. Fwiw, I had bass and middle at 6 (on the Rx dial) and treble at 3. Volume was quite low and Air Braked. I'm not sure it's the EF86, though. The M12, while a very different amp, does have an EF86 pushing EL84s. The M12, to me, didn't have that hollow effect. True, it's V1 in the M12, not V2. (The Z-28 definitely does not have a hollow-sounding midrange, but that's EF86 pushing 6V6s.)
