I currently own a Maz 18 Jr. NR. I love it, but I am really liking what I am hearing from the EZG 50. I never considered it because it was 50 watts and the Maz 18 was already too loud for me, generally. I've since tamed the Maz 18 with speaker mods, rectifier mods, anda Brake Lite. I've also learned over the years that wattage is NOT co-extensive with volume, i.e., a 50 watt head is probably only slightly lower in volume than a 100 watt head, not half of the volume as many people would expect. Therefore, even though the EZG 50 is more than twice the wattage of the Maz 18, how big of a difference in perceived volume is there (I am talking to get the amp into a sweet range, not distorted, but a nice full clean sound). For example, on the Maz my position is that the master must be at least at 10:00 and the volume at 9:00 in order to get the full benefit of a Maz clean tone. To get to a similar sweet spot with the EZG 50, how much more volume are we talking?

I subscribe to the rule that it takes 10x the wattage to effectively double the true volume of an amp so it would take a 180-200 watt amp to be twice as loud as a Maz 18. The difference between the loudness of an 18 watt and 50 watt amp is not as great as you would think. I own both of these amps and I'm not sure I can answer your question objectively as the basic clean tones and dynamics of the two amps are so different. To my ears, I can get to a "nice full clean sound" at a lower overall volume with the EZG than with the Maz 18. Put another way, the Maz needs to be turned up higher than the EZG to start sounding "full" at the point before it starts breaking up. Sorry for the terrible description, but does that make any sense? Others will probably do a better job at describing what they hear and may disagree with me entirely.

I think Ridge has got it right--I've been using the EZG mostly as a clean platform with pedals in the few days I've had it, and I find that I'm able to get great tones with it through a 4x10 and with no attenuation at about the same volume as the Maz in a studio combo with the Brakelite on 2 or 3 clicks. I've tried quite a wide range of drives/boosts with the EZG, anywhere from almost-clean to Rat to fuzz, and maybe because it's got some big, hot glass going on it seems to be able to generate a fuller, bigger-sounding tone at (relatively) lower volumes. It seems counter-intuitive, but there it is.

It may be also that there are no harsh artifacts in the EZG's tone, so you can run it a little louder without giving yourself a migraine. That was always my problem with the Monza--much as I wanted to love that amp, something about the quality of its highs and upper mids gave me some serious ear fatigue after even a short spell of playing.

...maybe because it's got some big, hot glass going on it seems to be able to generate a fuller, bigger-sounding tone at (relatively) lower volumes... I think that's about right. I don't have an EZG ( yet...) but I do have a Z-28 and I definitely find that it has that "big bottle" tone (fullness, fatness) that the MAZ just doesn't have with its EL84's. [Not that the MAZ is lacking in the tone department, but it's just different.]

Speaking of big bottles - how's that Delta 88? Awesome! Gotta work on getting it its own speaker cab, though. Aside from linking separate cabs together, I don't currently have any British-style multi-speaker cabs that can handle 88+ Watts. But yeah.. it's the "big daddy" of "big bottles."
