I'm interested in a Dr. Z amp but am looking for some recommendations from those of you out there who have some experience out there gigging live. I play mostly blues and R&B. Currently with Strat, 69 super or Vibrolux. I want something new and reliable. I'm looking for warm yet clear and clean with the ability to "cut" through when things get loud (drummer) and not being miked through the PA. I was thinking the delta 88 or the kt45 would do. I'll add overdrive, etc with pedals. I have a dealer nearby but I"ve found that you never know until you actually gig which one will do. I would like versatility to cover medium clubs to open air concerts. Thanks for your input.

Read all the posts on the 88 and the 45. From the gear you mentioned above I think a Maz 38 would a more logical progression.

Thanks for your suggestion. Do you have this amp or have any experience with it?

Listen to the "Big Kahuna". I agree. I've got the Maz 38 Sr NR 2x10 and I dare it to be squashed by a drummer. The Maz 38 chimes in clear as a bell and warm as the sun.

And it'll "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee".

hello strato, just a thought, while the MAZ 38 recomendations ARE well deserved (great versatile amp) it is an EL84 amp. I own one and freely admit that it sounds head and shoulders above most other EL84 types and is capable of VERY fendery sounds. That being said it sounds like your used to playing big bottle amps ie. 6l6's, as much as i like my MAZ, it is a different sound to my ears than than a bigger bottled amp. It does have that tighter focused thing happening, with a certain agressiveness in the mids and some compression. Its just me, but i like the rounder bigger tones from a 6l6 or kt66 etc. even an el34. Again i love my MAZ but i know instantly that i'm plugged into a el84 amp. Again thats not a bad thing, just givin another perspective. I think the 88 or the 45 would be the ticket based on the amps youve been playing

Thanks for all your suggestions. I did play through a maz 38. It was excellent. There are still some 88's out there and I'm gonna try check one of those out. I have a feeling these amps are like eating peanuts, you can't stop at just one.

That's the evil Dr. Z's plan. He sucks you in with one and then you're on the golden road to unlimited devotion. With the first amp it's like he's dug the hole and put branches over it. Next thing you know you're in so deep it's hard to get out! The 88 and 45 are the two loudest amps the doc makes so watch out, it would be hard to get them to give up the goods and not get thrown out of the club.

Don't discount the Route 66. It is a very loud amp and you can get it cleaner with a change in PI if you need it. I have played mine in everything from a 30 max room to 10,000 people outdoor festival and NEVER had a problem with volume. And it's definitely warm and wonderful!

I dont know if any one will read this but I'm about to buy a MAZ sr 1X12 combo with reverb. Any one care to put their two cents worth before I take the plunge? They want 1300 for it. Is this a good price? Thanks

Hey STRATO, don't ever wonder if anyone is going to read what you or anyone writes on this forum because "EVERYTHING" gets read. ;D
If you bought the Maz sr' congratulations, they are a great amp. I own one with a 12' blue bell, 12'silver bell pairing and can personally attest to it being a really nice and versatile amp. Lots of clean tones there with a reasonable amount of headroom for medium sized gigs. The master volume and reverb are nice touches as well and although the reverb isn't as sweet as on say a Blackface Super and you don't need to pull your surfboard and boardshorts out and hit the waves so to speak then it still is very nice and usable.
Just a question. You mentioned doing some un-miked work and outdoor stuff earlier. If the Maz sr is going to be your main working amp, what size are the majority of your gigs going to be? If you plan to play to 200 plus people and play only R&B and Blues then I would be seriously considering the Route 66. You mentioned warmer tones. I think the 66' is the Docs warmest amp out there. You already own 2 bright amps, the Vibrolux and Super. Getting the Maz is going to be a lot closer to those sounds. As stated previously, EL84 really have a chiming charachteristic behind them, class a EL84 amps do sound awesome, amps like the stingray,ac30 and matchless dc30 are amongst the best examples but you can't hide behind them if your an average player and they show a players shortcomings very easily. I'm going to go with what Jaye(Tasweigan) said back in July and suggest checking out a 66' if you get the chance before buy the Maz sr. If you want something totally different then thats the amp to go for. If the 66' still isn't loud enough and is breaking up too early for you then the KT45 with it's EL34's and huge clean might be the amp.
Good luck in your choice. It doesn't matter what you get in the end. Buying your first Z is only a stepping to building your collection. If you look at most of the members on this forum you notice most have more than 1 Dr Z in their tone arsenal.
Keep on pickin'

Good luck

This is really a great forum and it's because of the people who contribute to it. I don't know if the MAZ SR. is going to be the amp to end all amps, but the tone of the one I'm buying is really freakin' great. Honestly it gave me the grins when I played through it. Believe me I already own amps that are considered some of the great classics!(68'Superand Vibrolux)It has an incredible clear clean tone which is what I look for first. Like most of you, it won't be my only amp just my first Dr. Z. By the way, I put Tone Tubby's in my Vibrolux and that warmed it up nicely while retaining clarity. Anybody have speakers they've tried and recommend for the Z's?
