Hey, the M12 combo comes with a greenback and ive seen ones with the blue as well. Has anybody tried an American voiced speaker with the M12? Seems like a pretty neutral amp that would accept any kind of decent speaker???....Thanks

I've wondered this myself. I'm currently looking at a Weber speaker that is american voiced but with a british cone. The 12F150B.

If and when I get a cabinet,I will be trying a Eminence Texas Heat with my M12 head. I have read some people loosely compare the M12 to a pricenton type sound if so then maybe an American speaker would work?

I have Blue in mine and could not be happier. I replaced the Greenback that she came with and really liked the Blue better. I have to say though, the Greenback was brand new and not at all broken in.

I'm very interested in the Dr. Z M12, which is rated at 12 watts. I already have a 2x12 cab: one ceramic Carr Elsinore speaker (60 watts) and one alnico Eminence E.J. (50 watts). I have no interest in purchasing a new cab. Would this head be poorly matched to my 100 watt cab? Will it seem sterile?

Since owning my M12 head, I've tried it through all of the following speakers, essentially A/B'ing them against each other (tournament-style) until I came out with my favorite:
G12 Blue Tone Tubby red alnico Hellatone 30 WGS ET65 Scumback M75-PVC Weber 10A125/10F150 (2x10) Weber 12F150 Red Fang 10 G10 Greenback Weber Silver Ten
The Scumback M75-PVC is amazing with it (plus, it's the only amp that won't set that speaker literally on fire!). But also, the ET65 and the Weber 2x10 cab were quite spectacular with the M12, and I could easily live with either of those, as well (or the Greenback if you want a 10" speaker). The M12 does adapt to different speaker types quite well--since the amp doesn't impart a ton of flavor, the speakers tend to pull it in different directions fairly easily.
To answer another question, yes the M12 sounded pretty nice with some of the American-voiced speakers. With the 12F150, in fact, I later put that speaker back into my '65 DRRI combo and then A/B'd the 2 amps (using Radial HeadBone) into the combo speaker. With the Fender's reverb turned off, I was able to make them sound indistinguishable at the lower volume settings (i.e., below #4 on the DRRI's volume knob). I kid you not.

I just took possession of my second M12 yesterday. My first was a 1x12, and I got in a cash crunch and had to let it go a bit premature. I'm pretty stoked after playing through this head unit last night for a couple of hours. The volume is just right for the band I've been in... and the ability to use the volume nob to clean things up, as well as the tone controls to add more drive a great (though not quit as simple as Carl K makes it look with his train wreck.
Looking around I noticed that I have a bunch of speakers to match it up with. I'll list them here, and add commentary as I have a chance to pair them up and listen. All are my ears, mostly playing through Gibsons with either low output P90's or Humbuckers.
2x10 greenback 2x10 scumback H/M 2x10 celestion gold These lack mids with the M12 and I wasn't really digging them. I think these speakers sound better with the Z28, and need maybe need to be cranked a bit more to exploit why they have to offer. They were my first set to pair with the amp. 2x10 WGS G12C/G12CS 2x10 Red Fang Very nice... plenty of kids... a bit in your face, but I really like these speakers overall. They a loud, loud, loud... if you M12 isn't loud enough, these will help. 1x15 JBL K130 1x15 Altec 418 closed back Love this speaker... it's bit in your face in a closed back cab. Nice and balanced with plenty of mids, but it doesn't have that treble edginess that I often get with JBL's and a non Fender amp. So far, my favorite match. 1x15 Altec 418 open back 1x12 Altec 417 1x12 TT Red Alnico 1x12 JBL K120
I'll continue to update this as time goes on.

Been playing mostly with a pair of red fang 10's and really liking them. Swapped them out for a pair of greenback tens yesterday. Big drop in volume, slightly milder mid bump, and more speaker cone break up. Probably great for lower volume settings. At the volume I like to play... Not quite the headroom I'd prefer.

I like the tone of creamback M65 but the efficiency of the creamback H75 is working better for me right now just for the extra volume, and the tone is close second to the M.

I've been running mine through a pair of Z 1x12s, Gold/G12H30. Sounds killah.
