As cheesy as it sounds, I bought the new Stryper album (download from iTunes).
This isn't just my favorite Stryper album, this is probably my favorite hard rock album in the past 10-15 years! The guitars and drums are in your face, the guitars sound amazing (these guys haven't lost their chops) and the singer, while not as "high" of a singer as before, still has one of the most powerful voices in the business.... Plus you do get several of the trademark "screams" that Michael Sweet is known for.
Here's a video from the new album:

I used to love them back in the day. Even had a poster in my room. I see the guitar tones haven't evolved (blech). And what's the deal with the drummer in this video? Did they not have the budget to let him set up at least a 5 piece?
"no, you just stand here and move a cymbal or two...just look busy".

Guitar tone sounds real good to me. Definitely 80's hairband metal. The one guitar has a cocked wah sound. Not sure I like the minimalistic vision of the video.
I wonder if Oz did most of the solos on this album, or if it's still Matthew?
I saw them a couple times in the 80's out in CA..

They were all I was "allowed" to listen to per my parents.

^^^ Very interesting. I knew lots of parents who couldn't stand them. It seemed like you either loved 'em or hated 'em, especially parents. There was no in between.
I was in my early twenties and a long way from home when I was into them.

As usual what I wanted to listen to and what my parents thought was acceptable was a constant disagreement. They were more into the Bill Gather Trio and I was more into Van Halen. They meant well. Stryper was a middle ground.

The first few minutes explains how they get their tone and he talks about the EQ giving almost a cocked wah effect.

Ah, the memories!
Might be good timing for them to release a new album. Seems like there is renewed interest in some of these 80's metal tones right now. I like the power of the vocals after the guitar solo. Sounds good!

He doesn't get the volume on the amp past 2. Kind of funny.
