15 months ago, after 30+ years of too many amps and too much money wasted, I discovered Dr Z when I bought a used Maz 18NR head and a 112.
Boy oh boy...was I impressed. Been using the Maz all that time as my only amp until last week when I discovered the thing of beauty that is Remedy. I have now sold the Maz and have a shiny new Remedy (with PPIMV upgrade) in blonde to match my blonde Best cab.
I think my pedal board is now redundant. However, I have some questions..........
1. Reverb and Delay : I know it doesn't have an effects loop but I have tried the Reverb and Delay pedals up front and they sound crap - nowhere near as good as in the Maz (also plugged in up front). Why is this? Any tips for Reverb and Delay out there please? My reverb is Hardwire RV-7 and Delay is MXR Carbon Copy Analogue Delay.
2. If I am going to use reverb and delay pedals should I remove them from the chain of the other 6 pedals I have on the board? Will that make it better? What do you folks do for delay and reverb?
3. I also see no advantage or need for the BrakeLite SA I have - the MV seems to work well for low volume home practice on 20W setting. Is that what you would expect? Do any of you use 40W at home and BrakeLite to tame?
I think I have reached the end of the amp road with this bad boy. What an amp. Like lots of us, I've had Marshall, Boogie, Fender etc over the years and this thing just blows them all away. Looking forward to getting it cooking at gig volumes soon.

Hey John, welcome to a road becoming well travelled! The Rem is now by go to amp too after starting with a Maz 18 Let me address a couple of points: To use ambient effects in front of any amp, it needs to be pretty clean. The Rem is much more muscular than the Maz and has more gain, so running delay into the front end will cause the delay repeats to distort too. Not always a pleasant sound. I've learned to do without reverb altogether and to use delay sparingly and only for dramatic effect. I love the raw tones of the Rem too much now I use a Carbon Copy and it's as good as any IMHO. Forget the BL. At 40W with low MV and a BL all the mojo will be lost. If you need to play that quietly, use 20W and low MV. If you want more volume, go to 40 W first, then raise the MV Hope that helps

Oh, and the delay sounds MUCH better playing live than at home for some reason. Go figure!

Welcome, John. What Pete said. I've tried a couple of different delays and found that It(Remedy)sounds better(to me) without, unless your playing clean. The only pedal I use now is a Strymon Lex that I only use on a couple of songs during a gig.

Thanks for the answers guys. very helpful. I had band practice with the Remedy last night and cranked it on the 40W setting with full on crunch. Holy Moly - what a machine! I understand your comments now on reverb and delay and agree that, in fact, the amp so sounds good without them that I just don't think I'll bother. The Maz was terrific as a pedal platform but the Remedy takes things to a new level. I have also swapped out the 12AX7 in V1 for a 1965 Mullard and it just makes things even better My pedals and BrakeLite SA are now redundant. eBay beckons. Just used a tuner and straight into the amp. Marvellous. (But I guess you don't need to be told this?) I reckon this thing is one of the best kept secrets out there - the magazines and journalists still crave Marshall Boogie Fender etc..........Dr Z doesn't really get a look in. They should. The forum is great for hints and tips - keep 'em coming. John

^^^^ The good thing about the Doc is that he doesn't want to become what say 65amps are headed for - a big global player - so it's maybe okay he is the best kept secret around! I like that people are surprised / curious / amazed when they see and hear my Z amps (it also helps to hide my crap playing )

Hi - I've also recently got my first Dr Z's - a Remedy and a Maz 18 - whilst the Maz isn't going anywhere, the Remedy is most certainly my first choice. FWIW i use a T-Rex Replica as my delay - its super clean so it doesn't add in any extra dirt or grit to the sound.
BTW - that doesn't look like sunny Toon Town behind you in your profile picture - but being from Boro, what would i know?

Coming in kind of late on this thread, but FYI you may be able to have an effects loop installed at the factory. I have heard of others getting this done with the Remedy, so if you get to where you think you can't live without those time-domain effects, that might be worth considering. For me, the last thing I want to do is mangle the tone I have, so I've never considered it. We all want something different however...

Steve, Do you think they will do a mod for effects loop afterward or only when first ordered?

Welcome to the forum John.
I agree with Pete's comments above.
I don't use reverb at all and only use delay when absolutely necessary to replicate a signature sound (China Grove comes to mind). Usually, my Rem is running clean at 40w and I get dirt from a pedal or two.

For reverb and delay, you will be more satisfied relying on pedals to get your dirt, placing your delay and reverbs after them in the chain, and running them into a clean Remedy. If you absolutely must have the Remedy's natural dirt, then I recommend using the BadCat Unleash, which is a great reamping device that offers an effects loop.
