3 weeks since the last topic was started on here.... So I just wanted to say I'm REALLY loving the Stangray much more this time around! For those that missed it, I had one back in 2006 and sold it in about 2008 or 2009 - finally got one earlier this year (back in January). I got rid of my first one because it didn't seem to play with dirt pedals too well. Well......I don't know if I've "grown up" since my last Ray and dial it in different or my ears have changed or what? But this Ray is just killing it every weekend, with and without pedals. Major KUDO's to the good Doctor for an amazingly awesome amp!

Of all the Z amps I've sold/traded...I miss the Stangray the most. I'd REALLY like to hear what it would sound like with the creamback. (wasn't available when I had my 'ray.)

I've had two Stingrays and both have played well with pedals!

I keep thinking that the first of my Z's to go on the "thinning the herd" block should be the Ray head as it is the highest powered of the four and I no longer play out. However every time I plug into it I can't imagine pulling the string because it sounds so darn good, even at 9:00 on the volume which is as high as I can play it comfortably in my basement. Letting go of it is going to be really hard when the time comes.

The Ray was the first Dr Z amp I ever owned. It is awesome and pretty much the only amp I play in or out. It was made for a single coil Tele..the few pedals I use all seem to work well with it. Just an all around great amp. Thanks Dr Z. Someday I plan on another for a backup or in case he ever stops making them.

What a great topic. I sold my Ray. And have been sick ever since. I used mine to rock. It has the most creamiest midrange punch with just enough bite. I would run it with a gd and a 12H 55Hz heritage. Or even better a 4x12 2x. EVM/L with 2x greenbacks. Pure Rock n Roll marshall roar!!! It is A very loud amp but very pedal friendly. It would be nice to have a PP iMV if it was possible. Its on the list of amps to get again!! Did i mention tight spanking cleans that with a nice verb and delay rivals a many blackface fenders

I love my Ray too! Been really digging it a lot lately with my Albert Lee, a TS variant and a Klon variant. Both pedals tuned in just right with a hair of delay and......oh myyyy! A beautiful beautiful thing. As good as the Ray is at taking pedals, playing it everyday now I've whittled my board to just the three I mentioned above. My tone now is killer. Goes to prove, it AIN'T all in the fingers!

Great post! Y'all are probably weary of my Ray praises but the honeymoon is going strong. I love this amp and it's still my #1 all time favorite amp. Thank you Doc Z for creating a wonderful amp. Shimmering highs, thick chewy mids and a low end thud factor that rivals "War and Peace" hitting the desk from a 10 ft drop. My wonderful 82' JCM 800 stays home 99% of the time. The majority of my gigs are a wide mix of current pop to classic rock dance club music. I agree with Jamie the ray can kick out some powerful rock tones and into a Weber blue dog alnico 50w speaker I think I get tones that rival my old super reverb. Sadly I don't get to play much country/rock and have been playing a PRS smokeburst McCarty with 57/08 humbuckers. Never though a strat would take second fiddle. I'll probably lose credibility for admitting this but for the last 6 months I've been using a Line 6 HD500 into an EB Vol pedal into the ray into a stock Z Best. No matter what you put into the ray it delivers stellar tone, and the ghia too. Prior to the HD500 I was using a crybaby Q wah, Tim, Barber Direct Drive with the internal mods for high gain and Luxery Drive for boost, and a line 6 M9 for effects. The ray sounds so organic and toneful with that pedal board. The HD500 once dialed in, or I should say dialing out some the presets, is easier to tote, has less connectors and has some pretty darn cool effects. I do miss the OD pedals on the board but live and loud the hd500 and ray are amazing. The HD500 tube screamer and Rat pedal simulations are good for loud live gigs. I do use my ghia for many gigs, replacing 2 el84's is cheaper than 4 el84s but the ray puts a smile on my face and rattles my pant legs on tight stages. Did I say I love this amp? Telejas thanks for starting this thread. Nick glad to see your Ray is still making you happy. Spreading the Ray love.

I used the Ray almost every weekend. Volume at 12:00 and into the high input. Sounds absolutely glorious.

Ohhhh my this amp is fantastic. I wasn't expecting so much headroom which is good because it's different then my Rx Jr... I have it running through a Z 2x12 cab with a g12 and a v30. It sounds great just like that...I am gonna put blues in that cab soon.
I am very impressed by it and it will never leave my possession. It's in your face but a little more forgiving then the RX ES that I had before... I'm in LOVE! My favourite brad paisley album is 5th gear and it brings you to that tonal territory...

I'm in LOVE! My favourite brad paisley album is 5th gear and it brings you to that tonal territory... The Stangray has 5th Gear all over it, or should I say "5th Gear" has the Stangray all over it. The intro, to me, sounds all Stangray.... kind of Paisleys "Eruption", as I refer to it... lol
