Just purchased my first Dr. Z amp. I have used them in studio situations before (Maz 18 and 38 NR combos), but never had one. I got a route 66 and already have a 1x12 Z cab with a gold in it. I'm super excited. I originally wanted to sell my musicman and buy the Antidote. And I still may go that route, but I figured at about half the price (I got one on ebay) why not try out the 66 first. Anyways, thanks for everyone's threads and input on here. I have read it up quite a bit prior to making the purchase. I have been watching these for about a month now. Finally got one!!!!

Congratulations, I joined the ranks of Z owners with previously own amps. The Doc make great hard working amps. Love those EF86 circuits

Congrats on your amps and welcome to the Forum guys! great people and information here! There is something to be said for buying "previously owned" Zs. For some amps, like the Delta 88, Galaxie, Prescription, JAZ20/40 etc., P.O. is the only way you can buy them. Most of my amps have been acquired this way. That said, with P.O. amps you are always taking a chance. It's a good thing Doc is always ready to help with problems, as are people here on the Forum. Of course, there's nothing like being the first one to fire-up one of Doc's creations! They can be addicting

Congratulations. She's a killer amp. Both of my Z amps were purchased untried. I purchased a brand new Maz 38. After owning it for more than a year (right about the time I was really settling in with her), I traded her for a used Route 66 from someone hear on the forum (hi stratbrat). Love both amps. The Route is different from the Maz38. With not much more than a master volume the Route sounds great with her volume low for great cleans. There are excellent sounds to be had everywhere on the volume. You owe it to yourself to crank all the dials and use just your guitar volume to go from clean to chunky. An extremely touch sensitive tube amp indeed. The Maz kills, too.

Thanks guys! I really enjoyed the tone on the demo videos for this amp. It left me with the impression that I can keep it clean and still use pedals if I want to keep a lower ish volume. But cranking Z's in general seem to be the way to go! Can't wait!!!

Hey guys, the seller removed the KT66 tubes and wrapped them up inside the amp with bubble wrap. Is there any specific procedure aside from plugging them in, and then powering up on standby for the allotted time before playing? Thanks!

As long as the amp is properly biased you should be able to plug and play.

Sorry I can't get this thing not sideways (got it!) Anyway, I just played this for the first time tonight. I'm very impressed. The videos I have been watching have definitely given me a good impression of what this amp does, but not to the extent it does. The cab has 1 celestion gold in it (8 ohms). Sounds fantastic. I am trying to buy a matching 112 cabinet from the gentleman who sold me the head. It has a celestion greenback in there. I am definitely going to need an air brake as well!!! WOWZA this thing is loud. I thought my musicman HD130 4x10 combo was loud, but this thing is so efficient, it blows me away. I originally wanted the Antidote, and I think I still do. But I will wait for the year or longer period that it has been out on the market just in case any mods come along. I don't feel it needs any, but we will see. This thing is more than enough for me to handle at the moment. My pedals and guitars are sounding great through it. I have a '96 American Strat HSS and a '96 or '97 Frankensquire (david allen pickups, brass trem block, and a '97 American strat neck with locking F tuners). I'm definitely feeling a Gibson purchase soon with this amp too. Anyways, enough rambling. Thanks to everyone in the forum, I have read many discussions and they have helped me a great deal with gaining a better understanding of what the Dr. Z tone is all about!!!

3 hour rehearsal in the books tonight. super cool. my first time rocking a 1x12 setup. very different from the 4 tens. I really like it. That celestion gold is impressive. Can't wait to pair it up with the greenback, see how that works out.

I've been running a Rt66 for about 8 months now. I had been wanting one for a long time (since I bought my Maz18 ten years ago) and finally bought one off a forum member. I haven't really played it with the 1x12. Instead I've been using it with a z-best 2x12 I got a for a steal. I really dig that for the outdoor events. It's a little too much for indoors, so I've been contemplating a 1x12 convertible, but I also found a 4x10 that seems to be calling.
Congrats on your new purchase. Lots of fun ahead. This amp is just so pure, articulate and 3 dimensional at all volumes. Enjoy

you said it! this thing really exposes playing and the type of guitar, but I love that about it. it's a monster when you start cranking up the knobs! and I really do love the clean tone on it. just beautiful with the eq's at noonish. i have been thinking of a les paul type guitar to go with it since i only have 2 strats at the moment. i couldn't see how that wouldn't just be badass sounding.

Humbuckers sound terrific with it.
I would consider a LP, SG, 335 or their kin an essential addition.

But something deep inside just yearns for a reissue LP. I played my buddy's R9 a few times, and it sounds incredible!

What about a Collings 290 with humbuckers? How good with that sound:)

Did the same thing. Pulled the trigger on a used Route 66. I've owned the Carmen Ghia for about 6 months. Love it. Now I am turning my attention to the Rte. Everything I've heard and read make it sound amazing and I've never even played one! But it was the same with the CG. Unseen, unheard and utterly happy with it's purity of tone. I have the same high hopes with this new purchase.

I just picked up a used '66 myself and am equally impressed by it. I'm currently playing mine through the same Orange 112 you have and have heard from a few folks that the V30 isn't the best choice of speaker for that amp due to the level of mids. I'm sure it will sound HUGE with a Z-Best!

Thanks for the warm welcome!! Yes it does sound a bit middy with the PPC 112 cab. I just boosted the treble and bass controls to around 2 pm and that kind of equals a mid cut. I've also tried it with an open back cab that has a jbl d120f. As might be expected it is loud with a good bit of highs but also a killer bass thump. This combination gives an incredible clean sound Cheers

Sorry for the delay. Been out of town. The power tubes are Genalex - Gold Lion KT66's. I've not changed out any tubes yet but i do have a really good original 50's RCA 5U4GB that came out of a RCA console stereo. I am going to try it out

Tube info is on the Dr. Z site under the "Support" tab. It shows what he's putting in every amp.
