I agree that a chain is no stronger than the weakest link and speakon connectors certainly seems a better solution thus.
But since the guitaramp is a musical instrument in it's own right it may not be proper to go too far. Guitars and guitaramps are not hifi-equipment that strive to preserve the audiofidelity of the the input signal.
We use the amps to achieve a certain sound, to color it, to in fact achieve a certain in-fidelity if you will. Luckily my wallet usually puts a stop to my striving for perfection. ;D

Another +1 for PCNS. True that the cable isn't the complete signal path but the cables are very well made, sturdy (heavy duty), reasonably priced, and top notch materials.

Inertia. No one wants to be the first product to require you to buy all new cables. Yeah, there's that all right. But you could just as easily keep the 1/4" connections on there and ADD the Speakons. They are so much better it wouldn't be long before people will be asking why the 1/4" connections are still there... I suspect that it's because speaker cables are given a lot more current to carry than are instrument cables. I can see two sides to the "weakest link" argument. On one hand, you could talk about how the jack's minimal contact area is of little consequence because of the tiny amounts of current and voltage involved. On the other, you could argue that it's even MORE critical because of the low voltages that you have a very clean, solid electrical connection with minimal impedance artifacts. This can head down a pretty esoteric path: "should I use solid or stranded wire in my guitar's internal connections?" etc etc. My heart want to buy the "weakest link" argument-- that changing a cable can't affect the tone because you have a new "weakest link" keeping it down, so to speak. But my ears tell me otherwise-- an amp with a brilliant top end like the Stang Ray will easily let you hear the difference in a Lyric HG compared to the Planet Waves cables I use for my other stuff. It sounds so good I almost hate to connect by pedalboard because I only have the one Lyric HG, and my board uses the PW cables to patch in. Justin

Having a weakest link in a chain does not mean that overall improvements cannot be made without first changing that weakest link. It simply means that there is weakest link. Both problems and improvements in the chain carry forward. Which side of any amplification, gain, etc., a problem or improvement is matters too.
