Hi guys, I have a question, something totally new for me to be looking into. Long story short, our bass player quit our band and he owned the PA gear. Now I have to find affordable replacements. I have my own 12 channel board and I am thinking of powered speakers. I am going to a local dealer to look at some EV speakers, the new ZLX 15P series. These are class D 1000W speakers. We play a lot of smaller venues, clubs, nothing too big. I don't even know where to begin, they fit right in the budget at around $500 each. I am thinking they should do the trick but I am just being a little cautious...I would not like to buy the wrong product...I am sure the dealer will answer any of my concerns...just looking for some advice. My mixer is a Mackie Profx 12. Perhaps some of you gurus could click the link and let me know your thoughts. All that would be running through these is vocals, a hint of kick drum, acoustic guitar and once and awhile I'll stick a mic in front of the Maz Jr www.electrovoice.com/product.php?id=2584

I don't have experience with this model, Mark, but we have a couple older powered 15" EVs. They've been workhorses. One of them did crap out recently, but we isolated the problem to a loose / bad solder joint in the power amp. We should be able to fix it ourselves.
I also like the QSC K series a lot, but they're not cheap. Have heard good things about Alto, at a very attractive price point. Also, we've had good luck buying used Mackie SRM450s on eBay. They too have held up very well to gigging.

Thanks Mike! I got the EV's...I am quite excited to get em hooked up and try them at practice! There's plenty in these boxes for our band.

These things aren't too bad. I did plug em in today, run my voice and an acoustic guitar through...plenty of volume but I noticed one was distorting on the low end...I played around a little more and indeed, there is something wrong with this one...I took it back to the dealer and they are gonna look after it. The speakers are loud and relatively clear, good value for the money. It has the 1/8 aux input, great for feeding your iPod or computer directly into them. I don't understand all the technical stuff regarding frequencies, SPL's and all that but I think they sound fantastic. At $539 CAD per speaker, I am not complaining. I'll be able to report once I get the second one back and have a band practice. I'm also using for the first time, my Mackie profx12...simple, easy to use board. I'll be sure to report back as we go along.

That's certainly reassuring Jim!! I always tend to get caught up in reviews and of course I have found good and bad reviews. I went with my ears on this purchase. They sound great! I can't wait to get em into our practice space and see how we do with them. I like the fact that they are light. The stands I bought are the Hercules kind, my word, those are light too!!! We've dropped a lot of weight from the last set up we used to use.

One note: The rubber they use smells really weird (kinda skunkish but not that bad) when it gets heated up. Just a heads up. Let me know if thats common in all of them or just mine. I noticed that as well...I thought it was a little weird. I wonder if it will fade away in time...

Go for 12" speakers. I find 12" fronts maintain a tight bottom and a crisp top end when vocals are what the PA is mostly used for. I have some high end FBT powered speakers but I also bought some very lower priced Alto Professional TrueSonic powered 12s. If you need more bottom add a subwoofer or two. The Alto TrueSonic have stood the test of time for almost 3 years now. They're 250.00 each now. Get 4 and have fronts and two monitors... or get 2 and a subwoofer.
