I am looking for a stronger Reverb signal. Other than not being able to use a 12AX7 what other tubes can I use in the Reverb Slot? thanks for any and all feedback or info given , Jamie

Is there some reason you don't want to use a 12AX7? I always use a 12AX7 in place of the 12AT7. It's a trick I got from Randall at Mesa back in the 80s. I think it fattens up things, not sure I would say the reverb signal is stronger though. What amp are you messing with? What do you mean by stronger?

Bill Reeves told me I couldn't use a 12AX7 In the Reverb Driver slot??? I didn't question it just said oK. Im trying to get more Uhmpf out of my REEVES CUTSOM 30 MKII The Reverb is almost gone when the Boost is engaged, I thought maybe I could substitute the tube choice for more Gain. My SRZ is similar too. Its not as strong sounding AS Say My Super Reverb. I keep it on like 1-3 Max If it is placed on 5-7 its like playing in a deep DARK WELL OR CAVE ITS SO STRONG. iM NOT looking for the **** dale surf sound just to liven up my delay and add some depth to the notes. Now Im wandering why MR REEVES said that about the 12AX7? Is it a Pentode issue or what?

Don't know that amp, but I've never encountered a preamp circuit where you couldn't sub in any similar tube. Maybe he just doesn't like the sound of it. It's your amp, but if it was mine I'd give it a try. I do it in my Maz jr and think it gives the amp more guts. Part of the reason you may lose some of the reverb when the boost is kicked in might be if the reverb circuit is in parallel with the drive signal rather than in the circuit like in Fenders and the Maz. That's a guess. I would ask Bill why you can't use it if you are leery about trying it. Not clear on what you say above, but if you are saying that the Reeves goes to the "well" thing too fast it may be that it has a three spring long tail reverb tank in it and I am pretty sure old Fenders used two spring medium tail tanks. Lots of folks use long tails these days, but I don't like them. Even a three spring medium tail may help. You could try the tank from the Fender with the Reeves. It may not be exactly correct, but again I've never had a problem with things like blowing the amp by trying incorrect tanks. Usually you can put the amps back to back and get the tank plugged in without having to remove it. That might tell you if the problem is the tank.

One reason could be that a lot of reverb circuits ( but not all ) are current driven. The 12AT7 , while lower gain , puts out 15mA of current, the 12AX7 is 1.2mA , too little for some applications. I once put a 5751 (1mA) in the driver slot in my Maz 18 reverb and the reverb pretty much disappeared.
