Just a head's up for those of you that dig Greenbacks. Ted Weber has a new speaker called the 1225 in both ceramic & alnico versions. This was basically to clear up some confusion about which of his models is his version of the G12M-25.
As it stands now, Weber has three versions on the classic theme... From brightest to darkest they go like this:
Ceramic 30 watt Blue Dog- Lots of chime and a slight mid hump
Ceramic 30 watt Silver Bell- Like the Silvers found in late 60's Marshall & Vox cabs. Smooth, broad low end with a slight high-end roll off compared to the Blue. A Dr. Z fave!
Ceramic 1225- Smaller magnet, warm & woody..This would be the "default" G12M-25 like what Celestion is making today
And by the way, even though the 1225 is only rated at 25 watts, Ted told me yesterday that these speakers are incredibly tough. He told me it would handle the MAZ38NR (38 watts) or Route 66 (32 watts) with NO problem at all.
I think I'm going to try a pair in a 2 12's cab, one alnico and one ceramic. The alnico had a 40 oz magnet and will match up in terms of headroom with the 30 oz mag in the ceramic version.
Just some FYI-

Should kill with a Z/28 in a single or in a RXES and KT45 in a 2x12.

Jayson, how does the 1225 compare in terms of efficiency? If it would be a little louder than a Greenback(not a lot, just a little) that would be an awesome speaker!

I'm not Jayson, but for a quick answer to your question... alnico is warmer and breaks up faster. Ceramic has more headroom and a more gradual breakup with less compression.

Hey guys I ordered one of these new 1225 speakers from the Weber websight. An hour later I got an email from the guys who build these wanting to know where I found this speaker on their websight... they knew nothing about it. Here is what they sent me back after I showed them where they could find the speaker,"ok - thanks --- Ted didn't let us know that we had a new product ! we will get it going - thanks again !" They also jokingly wrote that they would have Ted build the first one for them. They will have the speaker done for me in about 10 days.

Interesting! I guess enough people were making special requests for an original Greenback M copy, that Ted decided to put it into production. (take a look at the Metroamp and Plexi Palace forums to see what I'm talking about)
kledbet - By the way, did you order yours with the "Pre Rola" doping/cone aging treatment? That's the build that the Marshall lovers over on those other forums have been going ga-ga over. Apparently, Ted will also do the Pre Rola treatment to Blue Dogs and Silver Bells. Might have to get me a couple pairs of those for a 4x12...

I have sent an email to Weber requesting the pre Rola stuff, but I did not request it on my original order. I think since they have not built it yet they can still work it out.

Ted emailed me and said it would not be a problem switching my order to the pre rola type speaker. He also mention the difference in terms of tone... here is his quote about the pre rola speaker it is ,"Warmer, smoother, overdrives better than standard cones without the treatment. Has more of a vintage british tone." Should be fun!

rcrecelius I will let you guys know about the speaker after it arrives. I will probably pair it up with my Z28 head. I'm going to put the speaker in my Z 1x12 cab. Originally I had Celestion Greenback in there that came with the cab, but for me the speaker was to brittle and just did not work for me. I think this newer Weber might be a bit warmer. I'll keep you posted.

OK, the speaker came in and I put it in a Dr Z 1x12 cab (red by the way) and used it with my Z28 Head (red by the way). I will say that as much as I disliked the Celestion Greenback that came with the cab, I like the new Weber (pre Rola treatment). It is not an efficient speaker so those of you wanting to cut down volumes will like it. The sound is warm, woody, full bodied, has good chime and decent bass. I didn't find anything I didn't like about it, and keep in mind its not broken in.... 30 minutes of play time. I actually picked up some treble by the end of the 30 minutes and a more relaxed feel overall. For those who like real Greenbacks, I think this speaker will be great. I used a Stat with Fralin Blues Specials to test the speaker.

I can say after using this speaker for awhile that it is not like a new Greenback at all. My Celestion greenback was kind of brittle and very trebly. This Weber version is warm with lots of mids and a surprising amount of bass. Since mine is the pre-rola type from Weber it is supposed to be warmer and have smoother breakup... it does. Just a nice creamy speaker that seems to work really well with my Z28 or Maz 18.

I just sent in a couple of Weber C1265's to be reconed as the 1225's, with pre-Rola treatment. I'm going to load them into a Swanson 4x12 (probably along with a pair of something else) that's unused right now.
Can't wait to hear them!

Just got my 1225/pre-Rola treated recones. GREAT sounding speakers! They need some break-in, but so far I'm realy pleased.
Thinking of ordering another pair, but with upsized 40 ounce magnets, for my open-back 2x12. With the stock magnets, they sound great in the open-back cab, but the bass could be a little bit firmer. I asked Ted about it, and he said that a 40 ounce magnet could take care of this.

I'm ordering a Blue Dog and a Silver Bell with the pre-rola treatment for my R66.
I'm trying to decide on 30 or 50 watters. I think I'll get alnico for both or ceramic silver with alnico blue.
Ted Weber told me that the pre-rola treatment breaks in the speaker nicely so there should be little or no break-in period needed.

Just got mine 2 days ago...........25 watter/pre Rola. This is the first weber I have had that sounded good right out of the box without any br. in period. Then, as kledbet said, after a limited amount of time, it started sounding even better. Kledbet's description is spot on, so I won't add to it..............I will , however, give this speaker a huge endorsement and say that if you love the green back then GET THIS VERSION! There is nothing I don't like about it.
My maz 38 SR even loved it! My z28 seems to be the best match with it........ Very Very happy with this speaker!

So... it's been quite a while. What is the long term opinion on these Weber 1225's? Did you keep them? I like the Greenbacks and have toyed trying a 1225 or two...
