My brother is looking at portable PA systems for use with his "disc dog" events. He's looking at a Fender Passport 300 which he can get for $650. He was wondering if there is anything else comparable out there that he should be looking at. He's willing to look at used gear to if it's in good shape.
Anyone have any recommendations?
Here he is with one of his dogs at a competition:

I'll tell you what. I bought some Alto Professional Powered 12" cabs with a horn. I've had them for almost a year and so far they are holding up surprisingly well @ 300.00 each. He probably only needs a couple of channels and a spare. And while you won't "need" a mixer as you can plug into one and daisy chain to the other, I'd recommend a mixer to control feedback. Each unit has 2 inputs for line/mic and a separate volume control. So if you use these as a Mains left and Mains right you would just run an instrument cable 1/4" on each end or XLR out of the board to each speaker. This system gives 400W RMS per side. In big open rooms you will need that kind of power. There are other lower wattage systems, but I'd go 400 Watts as a minimum. The System below will cost about 675.0I'm really happy with these speakers. I bought them as a backup to my higher end and was using them as monitors but started using them for FOH with great results. These also make GREAT Keyboard Amps. If you have a Nord and a Yamaha you can plug them both in. It has a daisychain/line out and a ground lift too! The system below would set him back about 675.00 for 2 powered speakers and 1 mixer.www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=928102&is=REG&Q=&A=detailsMixer with three band EQ www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/928234-REG/alto_zmx862_6_channel_compact_mixer.html

this is just the thread I've been waiting for as well...I have looked at a Yamaha Stage Pass and the option of a couple powered speakers and a 6 channel board for some small acoustic gigs...Seismic audio has some attractive prices...not sure on their quality but from some of the reviews, they seem ok.

Here is my two cents worth--I have used a passport system before( don't recall the model). I found that it worked really well, was easy to set up, sounded great and was really simple and very portable. I am sure all these other systems are good also, but thought I would let you know my experience with the passport system. I do know the system I tried was not the big tricked out system, it was one of the middle ones as I recall. Good luck in your search.
