I am "effect-less" for much of our set.
I do maintain a smaller board with a handful of effects because (believe it or not) the guys in the band demanded it! That is, they like wah on a couple of numbers, saturation from a good OD/distortion on a couple that call for it and slap-back delay on half a dozen tunes.
I recently discovered the Visual Sound dedicated buffer and put it first in line on my board and it really livens up the tone - They claim it sounds like your guitar straight in to your amp with a short cord and I think I am inclined to agree. We played a small gig with my trio last Friday. I brought my 335 and my nano Pedaltrain with the buffer, a wah, TS9 and DM-3 delay and was blown away by the sound.

Pedals are cool. No pedals is cool. Either way, we are all just grown ups playing with toys.:-)
Some like a plain hamburger, some want the works. Even a great-tasting, perfectly prepared hamburger is a little better - to my taste buds - with something on it. But I'm the guy at the fancy restaurant that asks for ketchup for my steak. I'm a bohemian. I like some condiments on my guitar. :-)
I like the sound of my strat through a boost - no matter what. That is, even through a great amp turned up a bit, I still enjoy the tone a little more when going through a boost set low. I like that something like an EP boost will allow me to roll back on my volume without things getting too thin. That's just what works for my ears/ guitar/ etc.
I really appreciate that so many here don't care how others get their tone if it works for them. On another forum I used to visit, this would have turned into something pretty ugly by now.
There is no morality to tone. It's just taste.

Not even sure this thread belongs in the "Effects" section of the forum. I do believe it's a fair question though. Me, I'm just now learning how to use my guitar volume. Been playing a long time too [Miley Face] My playing is changing as a result, maybe even improving. So I have been enjoying the sound of a guitar plugged straight in very muchly. Effects are so cool though! And the sky is the limit as far as what you can do with effects.

I played this way(guitar-cord-amp) in the late 60's to mid-late 70's. Problem was it was into a Marshall 100W Plexi (should've never parted with that amp) guitar wide open with the amp volume at about 3:00PM, 8-12's blaring, ears ringing. Then I got a job backed off for a while, came back with pedals a-plenty. Now I seem to be returning to the basics, but with a new awareness of guitar volume and tone knobs. I still have a few pedals but it's more time based stuff. I like knowing the overdrive is a natural result of amp, guitar and speaker. I think I can control it better. The psychedelic-fuzz thing is hard to mmic so usually I just don't try. We're not a copy-band anyway. S "Plus one for Au-Natural."

Bonamassa kinda supports no pedals.............. He uses wah and some other effects. He also uses speaker simulators.

I like to go bareback just to remember how to use the guitar and amp plus dynamics to get what I want. I prefer it as a singer to have less stomping and be able to focus on the song. Pedals are great for a lot of things and I love them but I could do with out.

After I installed a Brakelite into my Ghia, the OD pedals have been gathering dust for the most part.
