I recently purchased a Maz 38 head and I absolutely love it BUT there is a definite hiss when the reverb is turned up, along with the occasional crackle. The noise is not related to the volume of the amp so at gigging volumes it is not noticeable, but at bedroom levels it is very apparent. The more the reverb is turned up the louder the hiss. I have changed the reverb tube but that has made no difference. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Did you replace both reverb tubes?

I replaced V3 - 12AT7 which I understood to be the reverb tube

V1 and V2 are tone stack and gain. V3 is reverb V4 is rev recovery V5 is phase inverter.

Mine does the same, always has. It's my main gigging amp, and I never have the reverb up beyond 9 o' clock, so it doesn't bother me. I think it's a trade off for having the reverb tank so close to everything else in a head cab. It's worth searching the forum though, as this has been raised before.

When I first received my new Maz 38, and plugged it in, it squealed like a little piggy. I moved the leads that were plugged into the amp from the reverb tank. Just kind of rerouted them a little to keep them away from transformers and tubes best I could until the amp/reverb was happy. Also made sure the RCA plugs were plugged all the way in. I never had another problem with her.

I had this problem with a new Maz 18. I ended up swapping it for a non-reverb model and, eventually, bought a new Z-Verb.

Thanks for the help / comments. Bear in mind I am interested in guitars and music and all this electronics stuff if a foreign language to me!
I have found that my valves are (assuming v1 is on the left as you look into the back): v1 ecc83s v2 12ax7a v3 ecc81 v4 12ax7lps v5 ecc83s
Based on the post by doc01 above, the v4 valve should be in position v3, so I swapped this over and put my new 12ax7wb in v3. The hiss does not seem to be as bad as it was and I have had no crackles so far. Moving the cables from the reverb tank has not made any difference.
Could anybody confirm that this valve layout is correct?
The other comment I would make is that the level of the reverb is quite low. Compared to a Fender amp type reverb (scale 0-10), I would the Maz maximum reverb is somewhere between 3 and 4 on the Fender. Is this how it should be or is something wrong with mine?
Thanks in advance

Martin - the 12AX7LPS would be better served in V5 as the PI (phase inverter/starter tube). Give the WB a go in V4 for reverb recovery. See if that helps.

Sorry - I don't know what I was thinking when I typed that last post! I got my valve numbers mixed up. I did put the lps in v4 and the wb in v5 as you had suggested.

I did put the lps in v4 and the wb in v5 as you had suggested. That's not what I suggested. I think you did it again.

Sure did! I must concentrate more! The valves are exactly as you suggested.

Mine always had a hiss but it would vary from plug in to plug in. Also location made a difference regarding radio tower interference etc. There has always been some hiss but it doesn't bother me anymore. The Maz 38 does not have as much reverb as a typical Fender which is good because it gives you more usable reverb in my opinion; too much reverb makes it sound mushy and sloppy. I think it has something to do with the reverb tank size or model. Overall it is a different sound than a Fender so embrace it, find the sounds in it you cannot get in a Fender and play till your fingers bleed.

I've had similar problem with mine from day one. I just run it at zero and have an external reverb unit. I've been told that they are always noisy. However this past weekend I was playing a new one at the local Z dealer and I noticed that the verb was much quieter! The guy said that its been improved and informed me that I could send mine to the Z head quarters for the upgrade or mods etc. it would be nice to know if this is fact or not. It's kinda expensive to send a amp across the country like that. Maybe they could give the schematics for the adjustment to be performed more locally?
