I couldn't find another thread on this. I hear that the EF86 is known for its microphonic/ringing, etc. noise, and that it's kind of a trade-off for the great job that it does. The M12 is good enough for me to ignore the noisy tube if I have to, but is there something reasonable that can be done about that awful noise? I can't hear it when I play, really, but as soon as I let a note or chord ring, there it is. And it seems actually loud. My M12 is new and entirely stock. There's a ring or two around the tube, I remember seeing. Any solutions, without quitting the use of EF86? Thanks.

Besides changing the tube you could try heat shrink around it that may help better if it is still under warranty give doc a call and he might be able to replace it. ..

I removed the aluminum shield and lost 90% of the noise in my M12....

It sounds like you have a combo, I had the same issue with my combo after 2-3 weeks... That nasty ringing, I found a perfect solution... Head + cab.

I had the same issue but I'm not sure if it's totally related to the head/cab issue as I have used my M12 in both the headshell and 1x12 combo cab and could not trace it to either. What did seem to make a big difference is using an NOS Amperex EF86. Unfortunately, modern equivalents aren't very equivalent.

I have owned 4 EF86 amps (rx, z28, route 66 and matchless c30) and they all did it to some extent (all were head/cab). It was never enough to be bothersome. I have always used NOS EF86 tubes with 2 tube rings, and you will often get a dud that is really, really howly even in NOS tubes. THe Mesh plate tubes (Mullard, Amperex, Valvo) and the west german tubes (siemens, telefunken, etc. ) with the "can" inside seem to be the best.
I'd try a replacement for sure, NOS if you can afford it.

I would suggest the red tube rings that can be found on e-bay and such. I use them on my ef-86 and my el 84's and they really seem to help. Just make sure you get the right size as there are different sizes for different tubes. Pretty inexpensive solution.

My M12 does the same thing. And my son uses an M12 at church and it does it too. Are they called tube rings? Is there another name for them?

Just bought an assortment of sizes on ebay. What do you use to heat the sleeves with to shrink. (hair dryer?)
