Just joined the forum yesterday, and have already learned a lot about Z amps. I've been wanting to buy one for several years now, and tomorrow I'm going to order my first Z. I have always heard something that I liked coming out of DR. Z amps, but never could quite explain what it was, kind of a creamy warmth, a distinct tone I don't hear with other amps. After many thoughts and research I decided I'm going with the M12. I like pedals and this seems to be the amp that takes pedals well. I play classic country, new country, and classic rock in a local band every weekend around here. I play a tele through several wampler pedals, (ego, paisley, analog echo, and sovereign) Not sure what speaker configuration to order, but I'm leaning towards the 2x10 Z's in a combo. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions on the M12 and the speaker choice. Hope to learn a lot more here. thanks, Dan

What's the amp that's worked the best with your band? Does your amp typically get mic'ed on the gig?

I guess what I'm wondering is what's best for a Tele with single coils? I don't like ear-piercing shimmering highs. I want to throw my Tele on the bridge pickup and still hear thick, warm, creamy tones.

I would imagine the Z 10's would be good after a break-in period. I tried several 10s in a 1x10 combo M12 that I had and my faves were a weber silver 10 and a celestion g10 gold.
For 12s, it sounded ok with a weber ceramic silver.

I love the M12 with both a celestion gold and a creamback. I agree that you may find more flexibility with a 12" speaker.

I enjoyed my Z 210 cabinet while I had it but was so much happier with a 112. I have a Z 112 loaded with a Blue to go with my M12 head and it truly is a glorious match.

I've been going through the same thing with speakers and cabs. I have a Maz 18 NR head paired with an avatar 2X10 Greenback/Gold. Very punchy. But, I just ordered a M12 combo with the blue. I wanted a Grab-n-go amp with a different voice than the Maz. However, I also bought a used 4X10 Z cab with Dr. Z 10" Stock speakers. And I'm going to set the combo through its paces by a/b/c testing the M12 and see what I like most. FWIW, the two ten is awesome, loud and tight but just wanted a little more for some upcoming gigs. We'll see.

I really like the WGS Blackhawk HP Alnico 12", both in the combo and other cabs. Just seems to nail the best balance of everything with this amp.

I paired my M12 up with the 1x10 and a Red Fang. I think the RF is a great match for this amp. I just started to use the M12 again for gigs. I love the clean 70s funk rhythms I can get... Kick in a clean boost, OCD or both for some thick chocolaty solos. It's a nice package.

Found some time the other day away from my engineering job to actually pick up a guitar and I ended up plugging my M12 into my Germino 4x12, loaded with Scumback 20W PVCs (mid-60s paper voice coil Greenback recreation) and sporting the EC Collins cloth, and then comparing it to a bunch of other cabs/speakers and, have to say, there is really NOTHING in the world that compares to what this 4x12 does for the sound of just about ANY amp I plug into it. I have done this before but was smacked in the face by it again. I was shocked by how close I could get the little M12 to sound like the big bad Germino Monterey JTM 45/100 style head. Of course, the laws of physics ultimately rule in favor of the big Germino for overall girth, but the cab/speakers simply play an ENORMOUS role in the whole equation, far more than I think is generally appreciated.
