After I get my mini Ghia, I figure it's time to get a JCM 800-style amp. Does any one have any experience with both of these amps and if so, care to contrast the amps?
Of the few videos out here of the SRZ, it just seems brighter than the Olde 800. Has anyone ever tried them side by side and picked one over the other?
I'd like to buy under the Z banner if it works, but I'll never get to try either amp where I like. I like the sound of the Olde 800 on the Fargen site and it comes in a 25 watt version. However, my understanding is that MV on the SRZ is pretty good.
Anyway, I'm sure it's likely a long shot that someone has spent significant time with both amps. However, if so, any input would be appreciated.
Cheers
Keith

Don't know about the fargen but I did want to mention that there is a tremendous difference between the srz with e34ls and kt77s. The kts really balance the amp out and get rid of some of the brightness. I've heard good things about the fargen I don't think you'll go wrong with either one.

The Other Post reply nails the SRZ!! I Recommend running a Nice Closed Back Cab, Alos the SRZ will give you Way way more Flexibiltity than the Fargen for sure. I use mine mostly with 12M/H 2x12 running the gain at Noon-@200 Its heavenly with a little help from a BB or a Timmy, doesnt take much. Its the only amp that I own that the More you >PUSH IT! THe BETTER IT SOUNDS!!!! A Nice LE!!! with 77's will kill almost any Vertical Input JCM 800 or Clone!

I spent a little time last night combing YouTube looking for demo videos and, well, not a lot out there (which I knew). My reasons for liking to stick to the Z's is obvious , but the clips I've heard seem to have a brightness to them that is not what I'd be looking for. The Z-Fest 2007 video scared me but I figure that's just a case of a bad recording on a phone, etc So, are you saying that before you switched to the 77s, you found the amp a bit bright? Keith

I just want an amp that gets to that JCM800/Modded JCM800 vibe (without a pedal) in either a low wattage or normal wattage/great MV design. I know you've had the SRZ for a while...have you ever tried the Olde 800? Keith

Curt from Texas on the forum here had both a Fargen 800 and a LE SRZ 65 (#22 if I recall right ) - maybe you could drop him a note (He doesn't show up too often in here anymore). Also, the early SRZ 65s do not seem as bright to me. I have a SRZ 65 RC (2x12 combo) that just smokes! Check out the videos of the last Z-Fest where Butch is playing a similar SRZ - it's on fire!

Keith Ill say this. I got the tone I wanted out of the e34ls. I get the tone I want out of the kts while running on lower bass settings and higher treble settings. It's definitely not as bright but I wouldn't say it was too bright before. It is much more balanced with kts so if the room.changes you have a little more flexibility to dial in the tone you like. I also think it has a bit more/better gain and harmonic characteristics with the kts.

Mike Yeah, its Curt playing the SRZ at Z-Fest 2007 in the video I saw. I really think that one is just a bad recording and not indicative of the sound of the amp Thanks for the heads up on the other video. I'll try to check that one out. Sure wish my dealer would have one in stock Normally, I don't care (I ordered all 5 of my Z's without hearing in person), but this one I'm a bit weary of, mainly because I fear that it may sound exactly like an amp I have, more than anything else! yes i almost bought ryan shortys old 800 mkII before i bought my Reeves MKII 30 its a fine amp and ben makes great amps, but the SRZ really DELIVERS that 800 Tone you're after , the 34's just didnt Bloom in the MIDS and the BOTTOM Like I was After. If you run 77's and a SS rectifier its heavenly , However Im a Gain Junky! I like to run my Signal really Hot ala pushed with an EP Boost or a Timmy cause I roll the Volume back and forth between Vocal lines. It has a Great Master VOLUME, one of thre Best, You can turn the Gain to 11 and the volume at 3 and its just as glorious as running at 400 oclock, its a Loud amp but very tamable. There was an LE on the BST??? I wish I had The $$$$ I'd Buy it!!!! I love the Color Scheme, Keep us Posted!!! There is a REASON THE SRZ HAS BEEN THE FLAGSHIP of DRZ AMPS And around for so so LONG! Trust me its an awesome amp!

Actually, the more I watch the Dave Baker demo....the more 'right' it sounds.

I've got EL34's in mine, and while it's a bit bright with everything at noon (for instance), I just dialed back the treble and it's a killer. Love this amp!

A possible SRZ is on my short list for sure. However, my next amp will likely wont be a Z, but an amp from from one of Doc's respected counterparts in the biz. Ive been talking to Alan at Carol Ann amps and now that I have the Mini Ghia cleared away, I'll likely be getting an ODr from Alan. After that, Doc may have something new and wonderful kicking around ! Keith
