I'm wanting to change to a 5u4 in my route 66. Is this safe to do I will have it re-biased of course.
Also, am i correct in thinking that it will let the amp break up early on in volume? That is the main reason I want to switch to a 5u4

Yes. Compared to GZ34/5AR4, with 5U4 output is a bit lower, its a bit squishier and breaks up sooner. I've switched back and forth a couple of times, about 3 months with the 5U4 again and I think this is how it will stay. Both sound good, just depends on what you're looking for. I like the amp a bit better as a pedal platform with the 5AR4, straight in prefer the 5U4.

Cool. This is what I was thinking as well. While this amp is the best pedal platform ever I don't use pedals other than a wah when I am actually gigging so I'm for sure going to give the 5U4 a try....Any particular brand or anything I should go with?

I have an old GE in there, the NOS are pretty cheap. I think doc used the EHX 5U4 GB, good tube and pretty cheap too, like 16 bucks.
