Not sure if there are any heavier rock players here but can the SRZ handle metal on its own? I play more modern progressive rock/metal and am thinking the SRZ would be awesome for it! FWIW I play a route 66 with zero effects cranked all the way up and do fine for the type of music I play so it's not a question of gain but more of aggressiveness and quick response.
It's crazy that much gain isn't really needed in a live situation for heavier types of music!!

The SRZ-65 is a much better built JCM 800 (Doc's own version of it, anyway). The Marshall JCM 800 has been used quite a bit in metal. I'd say the SRZ would hold its own quite well. One thing that might pose a little of a problem (depending on your views...) is its tube rectifier. It might not be quite as tight/quick as the solid state rectified JCM 800. I guess it depends on what kind of metal you are wanting to do...

I think it would be perfect. I'm more into bands like tool, the sword, mastodon, sabbath, etc....so none of those bands have what I would call a tight or quick tone.
I've gotta find somewhere to check the SRZ out!!

Actually I have looked at that amp many times on here and tgp! haha I am trying to sell off a couple of guitars at the moment to fund an SRZ or another amp not 100% sure what I want yet. unfortunately, lefty guitars take FOREVER to sell so you might be hearing from me if your amp is still around by the time I sell my guitars. I can't believe your SRZ still hasn't sold man!!

Al, the list of bands you gave make up the larger percentage of what I listen to and the tones I like and use the most. The srz and 6545 are very well suited for what you are looking for. But I will say this, the srz does a better job getting there with kt77s. The e34ls are good but the kts make a huge difference to my ears.

I'm not saying you need to buy mine, I'm just saying that if/when you do go for an SRZ, the tubes will play a major part in the tone you are looking for. Since we are both itnerested in simialr tones I figured it best to share my experience with this amp.
The 6545 in comparison gets me the tone I want using the E34L's but to really nail it I had to switch my SRZ to KTs...
Speaking of 6545s, my new one came in today, check out the 6545 thread for some amp porn...

THE SRZ CAN REALLY NASTY IN A HURRY . I DO IT AT LOWER VOLUMES WITH A PEDAL OR 2. IT DOESNT NEED VERY MUCH UHHMPFF AT ALL WHEN YOU RUN THE GAIN AROUND 5 OCLOCK AND THE VOLUME AROUND THE SAME, IT RIPS!!!! EASILY GETS INTO NEW MODERN ROCK/METAL WITH A CLOSED BACK 4X12 CAB, IT DOES IT WITHOUT EVER BEING MUSSHY ,FIZZY OR SOUNDING STERILE. IT IS VERY ORGANIC AND MUSICAL WHILE HAVING EXCEPTIONAL SUSTAIN AND BEING HEAVILY SATURATED, PINCH HARMONICS AND NOTES RING FOR DAYS. OH YEAH KT77'S ARE MUCH BETTER SOUNDING!!!!!!

Does anyone have any sound clips of the SRZ really cranked up that they want to share? This is the "official" SRZ video. It gives a pretty good representation of what it can do... Here is another that I liked. It shows the cleans a little better even though it seems it was just recorded w/ the camera mics...
