Anyone using EV speakers with their Z? I've got an older EVM 12 that I was going to put into a cab and give it a try. Just curious if anyone else has already done it.

I've got some EVs that I bought back in about '78. They are well broken in. Right now I'm using one with my Ghia at home for rehearsal. I have the other one in my Evans JE150 jazz amp. They are very neutral killer speakers. They are also quite efficient and won't break up. They put out whatever you put in so you have to take that into consideration. If you want your speaker to shape and color your sound you won't like them. They are also very heavy. Personally, I like them a lot and will always keep them.

I used to have an EV 12" 150 watt speaker in a 1x12 cab and used it as an extension cab for my Maz Jr. It sounded great. Later, I bought a Z-Best and no longer needed this cab, so I sold the EV. Since you already own the EV, it's definitely worth a try.

I have an EVM 12L that I've been using for about 7 years in a little 1x12. It's the loudest 1x12 on the planet:)
I think power handling on this fella is ~300w RMS, so you're not getting any "speaker tone" from this guy.
I like the sound overall, but it's not very "toneful"-- it's kinda bland and seems a little more like a hi-fi driver than a guitar driver.

That's what I like about them, neutrality. I want to control what I hear. I don't want the speaker to put it's sound on the guitar. Mine have some major hours on them after almost 30 years so they may be looser than most and an older design so they could sound different.

I have an old 12L from an Acoustic cabinet I bought a few years back... Pre Z I ran that old open back cab and my Mesa Mark III with its oem 12L and it sounded gigantic. now in a different cab it gives my Ghia and 38 more than enough volume and headroom. Like Billyguitar, I guess I'd rather have a whompin' speaker that doesn't break up easily and provides a good clean platform for what I want to put through it.

I read somewhere that the design they use now started in 1983. How far back does a Celestion Blue go? Or maybe a Zippo lighter, even. Sometimes things are right the first time, but that's in the eye of the beholder, I'd imagine. One thing's for sure, the EVM12L is one HEAVY speaker! Wrestline mine into that little 1x12 was not easy-- it probably weighs 20lb... Justin
