Not me, I was very happy with what my Monza would do. I would still have it if I could afford to have more than one amp

I had a Merc for a few years and now have a Monza MV. They cover some similar bases regarding ability to get juicy, harmonic rich saturation at any volume. I think that's really the main overlap, though they're also pretty dynamic and responsive to attack and GV. Their voicings are different: I think the Monza's a bit darker at first, but at max crunch the Merc sags towards more darkness. At 75% max gain and below, the Merc can make more sparkle. Both have strong mids. The texture of their breakup is different, too. The Merc is chunkier, with less filtering on the lows and more snarl. Low output pups were more likely to really loosen towards flab. I liked this about the Merc, as it reminds me of small SE amps about to blow up The Monza's saturation is a lot smoother, kinda like a Trappist beer . It also starts almost immediately on the volume, whereas the Merc got up past 12:00 with the Tele. The Monza gives you more control over how thick the dirt is via its interactive volume and drive controls, though the Merc will take 6L6, KT66, EL34, etc. (w/ external bias adjust which allows you to move the center point on your dirt profile. The Merc can make gorgeous cleans; as clear as Blackface but a little juicier. It's got gorgeous reverb, too. The compact pine cab sounds huge. These things make the Merc more versatile and more likely to work an only amp from home to studio to smaller gigs. I'm still learning the Monza cleans, but they are there in their nice fat, roundness. The Monza is really a dirt specialist, though. It's got gobs of sustain and harmonic flavor with a super addictive feel. It just goads you to RAWK. So in a way, it's not as versatile as the Merc, but its got more range of high saturation timbre. It also can get A LOT louder. I love them both, and still miss my Merc. I'm on the fence w/ the Monza actually as I'm more in the edge, early crunch zone and the Monza likes to charge past that and let'er rip.

agree with digited. the mercury is more the blackface thing with a bluesy sweet spot around 12:00. the monza is a dirty rock'n'roll beast

Thanks. What beautiful comparison. I just scored a Merc and switch back and forth between it and my newly acquired Monza (MV). I truly love them both, and don't see myself ever getting rid of either. Z-Talk Members RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
