I have a Maz Jr Reverb with a Weber P12Z in it. And I loved the sound of it for many years. Now that I own a Z28 with Z 2x10 cabinet I am wanting a 12" speaker for my Maz Jr that is not as dark as the P12Z. I want a speaker that holds definition better and has a more bell like tone. I primarily play blues and recently have installed underwound Fralins and a Callaham pre-wired pickguard in my JV strat to achieve a more bell like clear tone. You can hear my Maz Jr in action on a couple of MP3 clips at www.houndstoothblues.com (this is with the stock pickups). Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hey, bro... Lots of options here... Basically, the P12Z is what is now known as an alnico Weber Silver Bell. Definitely a darker speaker in the alnico version- The ceramic is a little clearer, but might not be the direction you want to go in if you are playing a lot of blues and are into more of the vintage Fender thang..... One thing you can do is e-mail Ted Weber and tell him what speaker you have- he may be able to re-tweak the voicing of your speaker with re-cone, re-dope, etc. He's stopped re-coning speakers in the last year or so, but will do it if the speaker is one of his. Or, you could try a number of things that are out there. I've recently been pretty impressed with the Eminence Red, White & Blues and the Texas Heat... Both are a little more "American" soundind in nature- Fat, tight lows with some airy-ness kind of like a vintage Jensen... Another great speaker along those lines is the Weber 12F150T. It's basically like a Jensen C12N, but with a slight mid-cut & added sparkle.. If you wanted to go with more of a Brit "chime" thing, then something like the Emi Red Fang or Weber Blue Dog might do the trick. The ceramic Blue Dog is kind of like a Greenback, but with more lows. Still has some nice Vox-y flavor, though. The Alnico version is like a Celestion Blue- Plenty of chime there, especially in the 15 and 30 watt versions. The Silver Bell/P12Z can actually do the "clarity" thing as well, but only if the voicing is right. I've got lots of sound clips of different speaker models here: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770If you scroll down towards the bottom, you'll hear some basic clips of just Strat or Tele into a MAZ 38 or 18 through some of those speakers listed above. Hope that helps! J
