I'm new to the forum and consider it an honor to be here, so I hope I do this correctly I would like either a Monza (new MV version) or a Maz 8. I play exclusively at home. I need "bedroom volume". I like '70s and 80's hard & heavy rock: Sabbath; UFO--"Force It" album, "Rock Bottom" song; Paul Kossoff (Free--"Fire and Water album); Tommy Bolin; as well as NWOBHM and Dokken ("Tooth and Nail" album); Zeppelin I never play clean. Les Paul's (Burstbuckers & 498T) straight into the amp. no pedals. I like "power amp tube distortion" the best Sorry, I keep editing PLEASE RECOMMEND

Do you want to use pedals, or get all of your dirt from the amp?

I'd say, provided you like the monza's tone (watch the Dave Baker and Frankie Starr demos on youtube) that the monza will be right up your alley. The maz is more versatile, but the monza sounds like what you are after.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUGGESTIONS AS WELL AS THE WELCOME (MADDOG, I LOVE THAT CAT PIC!). YOU HAVE VALIDATED WHAT I WAS THINKING (MONZA), BUT DAVE BAKER'S VIDEOS HAD ME REALLY THINKING ABOUT THE MAZ 8--CAN THAT GUY PLAY, OR WHAT???
I'M IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING GEAR TO FUND MY NEW PURCHASE (YOU KNOW HOW THAT GOES), INCLUDING A MINI-Z THAT I RECENTLY SOLD--EVEN WITH THE ATTENUATOR, IT WAS TOO LOUD FOR MY SETTING, BUT I LOVED THE SOUND.
AT THE MOMENT, I'M LEANING MONZA.

That's funny - I was going to tell you to consider the mini z. I was going back and forth betwixt the Ghia and the Monza forever, and wound up taking a chance on the mini. You are correct that the onboard attenuator really doesn't haul it down to true bedroom levels, but the Swart night light does (mini atten on zero clicks). Classic rock crunch and grind at tv watching volumes

Yeah, that Dave Baker's a monster for sure..... If you live near San Antonio Tx (or are ever in the area) you are certainly welcome to swing by and play my Monza anytime....

EVERYONE HAS MADE ME FEE SOOOOO WELCOMED!! YOU ARE ALL "Z"GREATEST!!!
LIMENINE, THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION OF THE SWART; I AM TRYING TO STAY AWAY FROM ADD-ON EQUIPMENT. THAT WAS ANOTHER REASON I WAS QUESTIONING ABOUT THE MAZ 8. I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF THE MV MOD BUILT IN TO THE MONZA.
MADDOG, SUCH A GRACIOUS OFFER. THANKS 1,000,000. UNFORTUNATELY, I DON'T MAKE IT TO TX (A PLACE I LOVE), BUT MUCH APPRECIATED.

Rockinroll, musically you are a man after my own heart. I understand using a pedal or rack mount for echo, flanging, or reverb, but I don't understand using pedals for distortion when your amp should be producing great distortion for you. Further, the best articulation (and by that I mean the way your rig conveys all the subtle nuances of what your hands are doing) obtainable comes from plugging your guitar straight into your amp, with nothing in between. From what I read, though, you and I appear to be in the minority. A lot of folks like using pedals and some of them seem as serious about their pedal selections as they are about their guitar and amp selections. These folks probably scratch their heads and wonder about us "purists" in the same way we scratch our heads and wonder why someone would spend two or three thousand dollars for an amp and then override its tone with a $100 stomp box. Oh well... And by the way, welcome to the forum. Read more: ztalk.proboards.com/user/4695/recent#ixzz2J3Ae2oUJ

Hey welcome. My only thing is a monza, and the mini was too loud? I just had a mini and just got a monza. The monza is loud loud loud. Sorry but if you put that master all the way down you still lose a bit of quality. That is exactly the deal with the mini, it is loud too but you can let it rage to get all the tube overdrive you like. I mean if you say you never play even close to clean the monza will of course work at a lower volume. It will also work for other sounds if you play at home at the volume of un miced drums, or think 150w solid state p.a. But the monza is not a bedroom level type of amp even with a master volume. IMO. Fair warning.

I've had all three amps in question in my home, my son still has the mini Z. At bed room levels you will not sound the same with any of these amps as you would at stage volume. In my opinion, the mini Z with the new transformer sounds great but it still doesn't go 80's high gain. The Maz 8 will do a lot of great tones but you may want to consider a pedal out front if you want the high gain goods. The Monza with the MV is pretty amazing and even though you might loose something when you dial it down it still sounds great, even at lower volumes, I didn't hear much loss other than the speaker wasn't moving as much air. Check out my vid when I first had the MV mod to my Monza.

Thanks, pcns. I have indeed watch your Monza video (several times!). I LOVE that "sqeaking sound" (as I call it--don't know what causes it, but i LOVE it!!!!!) when you dialed in the "dying battery" around 1:10. It's a lost sound nowadays. I hear it LOTS on Sabbath Vol. 4 and Zeppelin "Moby ****".
I don't always do '80s, but would like that capability some times. To me, the Mini Z sounded like Schenker on Assault Attack, and I loved it. But I've lost too much hearing, so I had to wear ear plugs (muffling the sound).
So, you would recommend Monza?
ALL of you fellow-Z'ers are GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT. It's an honor to be associated with you

Ideally, you'd be able to try a Monza out before you buy one, but I know that's not always realistic. The great thing about the Doc's amps (and this forum) is that if you buy one, you will be able to sell or trade for others without losing your shirt in the process.

Wed 2/13 OK, I am TOTALLY IMPRESSED with the Monza Just got it this evening and spent a little time messing around with it. WOW!! Although I can't compare it first-hand to the Maz 8, I am very pleased with my choice. THANKS, all you Z'ers out there. You are Z-BEST!!! Oh yeah, sounds GREAT at bedroom levels

SAT 2/16
OH MY GOSH!!! I just had a chance to CRANK the Monza (certainly won't be playing at THAT volume very often). WOWWWWWW. Even makes it sound better at lower volumes. I'm UTTERLY SPEECHLESS. NO OFFENSE to my pedal-using bruthas and sistas out there, but revrand is correct. Monza really is AMAZING without pedals. I can't rave enough about the Monza. WOWWWWWWWWWW WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Sorry, crazy couple of days at work Yes, mine is indeed the master volume version (thanks, PCNS--yours and Dave Baker's videos are what sold me). That gives me "bedroom levels." For me, "bedroom level" means from the (low) 80's to low 90s decibel range (mostly mid 80's--I have a meter--too many years of Sabbath, I've lost too much hearing--WHAT?) I'm getting a sweet sound at a decibel level in the 80's. Settings: Volume & Drive about 1:00. Tone, about 4:00. Master, about 7:00. I'm amazed at how much tiny incremental movements of the Master make it LOUDER or lower. Also, the Volume pot really impacts the sound.
