Hi - just picked up a Mini Z head to use at home. It was a demo unit at Gelb Music in Redwood City who really took care of me on the deal (thanks, Ed!) just like they always do. I'm playing it through an old Peavey cab with a Cele Blue, and I'm very impressed by the tone especially with Teles and P90s. However, with humbuckers, it would be nice to have a bit more headroom and articulation. I'm a tube twiddler and am planning to experiment with JAN 12AT7 and AY7 tubes in the pre-amp but wondered if anyone has subbed a 7189 for the EL84? from what I've read, these are directly compatible with the EL84 and have a higher break-up point. Premium 7189Any experience, opinions or thoughts? Thanks! Martyn

Talk to tom the guiar guy or headshrinker marc, or you can just look farther back in the old pages.. They swear by using a 12ay7 and various other tubes to get more clean headroom. If smoother is your thing then the transformer modificarion worked wonders as well.
