Depends on the sound you want to get. Here is an excellent resource to help you decide. www.thelisteningsessions.com/home.htmGenerally studios use a variety of this including combinations of condensers and dynamics to get a certain sound. I usually use a 57 for pa sound and a 57 and a condenser to record rock guitar, often an audio technica 2020 (cause its cheap, and sounds pretty good for voice and acoustic too)

If you don't mind spending some dough, a ribbon mic like a Royer or a Coles is killer. You also need a good pre, especially with the Coles. My guitar tracks have improved 200% since I got my Royer 122. Mixes with a 57 great for more bite. Be very careful though, ribbons are very delicate. Don't ever blow into it, or drop it. We were actually in the studio 2 nights ago, and I was just laying down some scratch guitar. (We were focusing on getting great drum tracks) We stuck a Beta 57 on my cab, and I wasn't expecting much, but on playback the guitar sounded great! I may have to get one of those

The thing I don't like about old Shure designs is that treble peak.

Thanks for the link Dogma! I was suprised to hear how much of the sound was in the mic pre! It's like put your money in a nice preamp and then get better mic's . I have a digi 002 and the pre's in that are nothing compared to...API, MARTECH, NEVe, etc.. I don't have the cash for a really expensive mic pre, so I may buy a SHURE KSM32 and combine that with the '57..I'll see what happens?

I abandoned my SM57s for the Shure Beta 57s. I read a great article on retiring Grandpa (the SM57) and it was right. I used to utilize 2 mics a small diaphragm condenser at 3 to 4 feet away and a 57 about 6 to 12 inches away. The Beta 57 has more of the high response and clarity and open airyness of the condenser there by elminating the need to have 2 mics. If I had some big $ I would buy a really nice pre and some ribbon mics. But the Beta 57s through a Mackie board to 1/2" 8 track reel to reel sound great. As a follow up, I went out and bought a Shure KSM27 condenser and it is really nice!!! I saw Robert Cray using one of the Ksm series mics, and I went for it. I got mine new from guitar center for $250 out the door. I used it 1/2 away from my Z best cab top speaker, and had a '57 on the bottom speaker..The combination was really nice, and gave me the sound that Great "Zbest" combination sound. I'll post some sounds next week! Thanks for the help "Proboard members"!
