has anyone used an avatar cabinet with a Maz-38 and if so, what speakers do you have or would you recommend? I'm thinking vintage 30's to accent what's in the amp (G12H 30 watt anniversary special) or a combo speaker setup with one vintage 30 and one G12H. mainly using a 62 strat but occasionally use a Les Paul custom.

V30 and G12H is hard to beat. The tonker and swamp thang is a favorite combo too.

Avatar makes nice stuff for the money. I had a 2x12 V30/G12H that sounded very good to when I owned it. I'm currently using an Avatar 1x12 "cube" with a Tonker for my Ghia. It sounds big & open with nice low end for a 1x12. I got it with blond Tolex and it is the E-X-A-C-T same thing my Ghia is covered with. I was playing a gig last week for the Charleston Blues Bash Festival and a guy who works for Clark amplification came up before the show to check out my rig. He thought the Avatar was factory made for the Ghia (i removed the little Avatar Logo) and was surprised to find out it wasn't.
The places Avatar cuts corners are no t-nuts for speaker mounting (cheap dry wall screws), particle board for the grill cloth frame and very light gauge speaker wire. I just install some t-nuts & bolts from the hardware store and solder in new, thicker wire. There's not much you can do with the grill frame.
Mojotone also offers empty 1x12 or 2x12 open back cabs starting at $200.00. I've never owned one, but they have a great reputation.

For the money, I don't think you can beat an Avatar cab. I have a 2x12 v30/30H and love it. Is it the best, no. But you can't beat the price, especially it you can buy one used.
