The Gold is a wonderfully balanced speaker and is great with the Ray in a 1x12. If I were considering a 2x12 Ray, I would go Blue\Gold or Gold\Gold rather than Blue\Blue. Just my opinion. Tons of folks with more experience and better ears than mine like the Blue\Blue setup.

If I had my choice in a 1x12 or a 2x12 and weight/footprint size didn't matter.... I'd get the 2x12 with Blues,or a Blue/Gold or even a Weber Alnico blue or blue/silver combo.
I'm currently playing my Ray through a 1x12 Weber Alnico Blue dog and the Ray sounds AMAZING! But this past week I plugged my Ray head into my Hayseed combo speakers (2x12 Weber alnico blues) and it was AMAZING x2.... It just sounded so much better and fuller. I also remember this from the past when I had my 1st Ray and a 2x12 Dr. Z cab. But if you don't have an attenuator and are concerned about volume at a gig, the 1x12 is a little less thunderous on the volume.
The Ray is an amazing sounding amp through a 1x12 or 2x12 and will sound the same FOH or on disk when recorded, so it all comes down to what you want to hear when you play it while in the room or stage with it? Currently the 1x12 works best for me for the smaller stages I play on, but I hope to have a 2x12 cab someday soon (again) and have a feeling that I will play the 2x12 more often.

telejas, what Weber Alnico blues do you have in your 2x12? watts? I have a cab with 2x12 Blue Dog Alnico matched up with a Silver Bell Alnico.. both are 100 watts and stay very clean and a lot of punch.

Based on the additional discussion bringing Weber into the mix, the 2x12 cab I use with my Ray and Ghia is a Cele Blue + 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog. I think the 100 watt alnico BD\SB cab would sound great with the Ray.

They're 30wt speakers (in my Hayseed 2x12 combo and my 1x12 cab). Previously (2006), I had a 50 wt Alnico blue / Silver bell in my Dr. Z 2x12 cab...... This cab was REALLY full sounding and had massive low-end.

My first Stangray was a 2x12 combo cab with 2 Celestion G12h speakers. I knew right away that I would be swapping out the G12hs for 2 Celestion blues to fit my country/tele style of music. But those G12Hs sounded great with the Ray, had so much full rich response with the ceramic speakers and the Ray's nice low end.
With the 2 blues the Ray sounded fantastic. I only got rid of that 2x12 Ray because of the weight. Wow it was heavy. I loved the Ray so picked up a Ray head and then a Z convertible 1x12 cab with a Celestion gold. Right away I noticed a loss in fullness between a 2x12 cab and a 1x12 cab. However, the gold sounded terrific and even better when broken in. I played this head/1x12 cab setup for a while and it sounded great at church and with my band.
A few months ago I found a 2x12 Dr Z open back cab with 2 blues that matched my Ray amp head, so I had to get it. I ran some a/b testing between the 1x12 gold and the 2x12 blues. At first, I thought that they really did sound similar aside from greater coverage from the 2x12 cab. But the more I played, I found that the 2x12 blues just sounded great, even better than the single gold. As if some magic was happening between the Ray and those 2 blues. I can see why the Doc paired the Ray with the 2 blues.
During the first gig with my band and the 2x12 cab, I was loving the tones I was getting. Thinking to myself throughout the night, wow. My Ray with the 1x12 gold sounded great, but there is something extra with the blues to my ears. Of course, ymmv.
A few more gigs and I decided on the 2x12 blues was the way to go for my tone. I originally thought I would use the 2x12 with a blue/gold combo, but I am going to just go with the 2 blues. It is not as if I am getting anywhere near cranking the Ray anyway, so the blues are no problem at all regarding volume and getting loose in the low end.
Once the decision was made, I then sold the 1x12 cab after swapping the gold into my Maz Jr SC. That gold is an awesome speaker as my Maz sounds so much better now too.

i THINK 2X12 ARTE BETTER WITH THE RAY!!! 2X GOLDS.!!!! OR 2 GREENBACKS!!! OR 2X WEBER LEGACY'S AWESOME!!! HOWEVER THE BEST 1X12 I CAME UP WITH FOR "MY NEEDS" ROCK COUNTRY BLUES AND VARIETY WAS A 1X12 drz CONV CAB WITH A CELESTION 12-65 FROM 1981 ALL ORIGINAL, CLEANS TO SUPER SATURATED GAIN IT NEVER FLUBBED OUT OR GOT TOO TINNY JUST PERFECT!!! 2X12 IS THE ULTIMATE TONE , 1-12H HERITAGE 55Hz CERAMIC AND AN ALNICO GOLD IS THE ULTIMATE COMBINATION
