If you are asking yourself the question of whether you should get a thd hotplate or a Dr.Z Brakelite...
The THD is one of the absolute WORST purchases of my entire musical career. I won't get into details just suffice it to say that if you desire repair/service from thd-YOU WON"T GET IT!!! Sad, really.
Plus, my Brakelite has NEVER needed any servicing...and works with just about any ohm rating. unlike the hotplate.

I had and gigged a THD 16ohm hotplate for like 3 years before I traded it in on the Swart Night Light. I never had any troubles with mine. Sorry you did with yours, but I totally am interested in the Brakelite for me ol' Ghia to assist the gigging department of life. The THD was kinda a pain to haul around and set up all the time.

THD hotplate is kind of flawed in that they are ohm specific. I also felt that the 'clicks' were too wide. I could never dial in the right volume. Either too loud or too soft.
Brake Lite and Air Brake have both worked so much better for me. They get used in the studio for 90% of guitar tracks. Less compressed sounding also.

^^^^^ I was doing some basement recording this past weekend with the Ghia, and a Brake Lite on 4 clicks (max). The tracks sounded huge on playback, while the volume in the room was pretty darn moderate.

I never had any problems with my THD Hot Plate. Owned it for about 3 years but it was a 2 ohm and I sold it along with my tweed bassman. Now I have the Brake Lite which I'm very pleased with. I never owned both at close to the same time so I can't compare them from a functional standpoint.

I still have three THD Hot Plates, but never use them. I should put them on eBay I guess... I did make a comparison suite of recordings at one time, and I thought the Airbrake sounded a bit better. Except when using the THD Flexi-50 - then I thought the Hot Plate sounded better. Go figure.
