Hey all,
Not really relating Z amps/cabs, but .... I recently purchased the Cream reunion DVD and am enjoying it alot. Clapton has a Leslie cabinet that he uses on Badge and it sounds great. I'd love to have a Leslie cabinet of my own, but the reality is -- I believe -- that they are impractical because they're:
a. a pain to cart around b. not easy to come by and kind of expensive c. difficult to maintain
Or am I wrong about this?? I wonder if there's a potential market out there for others like myself who would want to own a Leslie type cabinet. If anyone here has input I'm-a-listenin' .....

Leslies are huge and pretty expensive now. Also you need the harder to come by preamp or you can't plug a guitar into it. The Fender Vibratone and Leslie equivalents work pretty good. The Fender uses a bad sounding 10" while the Leslie version I have uses some kind of cast frame Jensen that I've never seen before. Either way you'll want to put in a higher efficiency speaker, as high as you can find (I use to use an EV Force 10" in a Vibratone that worked well). You need the higher output so that when you switch to the Vibratone you don't lose a lot of volume. I also use to take the front grille off of the Vibratone for a couple more dbs. Having said all that, I'm sure someone can steer you to a good Leslie imitation pedal to save your back and wallet from undue stress.

KC, check out the "Voce Spin 2" pedal if you get a chance. It is supposed to be "THE" leslie simulator to get. Here's a link to one that Mass Street Music sold, so you can check out the blurb. www.massstreetmusic.com/show_indv.php?item=01652&img=1My Foxrox TZF does a fantastic leslie too amoungst other things. Hope that helps. Sure would be easier on the back!

Check out www.hobex.com for sound clips of some sweet Leslie-flavored soul. Frontman and lead guitarist Greg Humphreys has been known to record through a Leslie, but I've never seen it in his live set-up. I'm sure you could email him to see what he uses for the road. From the sound clips up now, it sounds like all the Leslie sounds are coming from a B-3 Hammond Organ. I guess his guitar sound "revolved" back when Hobex was just a 3-piece, before they got the keys and horns. A sweet outfit and groovy listen, anyway.

Speakeasy Vintage Music has a Leslie cab without the power amp but with the switches for speeding up and slowing down the rotors. Speakers in the cab are driven by a guitar amp head or other external amp. Years ago I bypassed the electronics in a 760 Leslie cab, put in a passive crossover, and drove the cab with a 65 watt MusicMan amp. The amps tone controls made a major difference in the sound of the rig. I also loved the sound of the reverb coming through the top rotor. Wish I still had the cab. My dream rig is a speakeasy cab driven by a Maz 38 head along with another Maz 38 combo. www.speakeasyvintagemusic.com/leslie-cabinet.shtml

Bentley guitar studios in Parkville, MO has a Fender Vibratone now. I used to own it and sold it to another guy about 10 years ago when I got a better one. I don't know what speaker is in it now but I'm sure it's not the original. The original speakers in those sounded bad anyway. Also it appears that something is a little boogered up on the cable set.

Motion Sound makes some products that I've always wanted to try out on the guitar, but the cost of doing the trial is prohibitive. Still, here's a link in case someone here wants to give them a whirl (pun intended)... www.sweethingyer.com/store/manufacturer/Motion_SoundMy H&K Rotosphere II is a darn good sounding Leslie simulator if it just wasn't so noisy and HUGE for a pedal. well that's interesting - the board automatically changes "sweet water" into "sweet thingyer" - what the... ?? Lessee if it changes it without the URL tags: www.sweethingyer.com/store/manufacturer/Motion_SoundApparently so... dang, that's a nice link too... Just change that sweethingyer to sweet (no space) water and it will work.
