Warning, the following post is not for the squeamish......
Had a meeting canceled this afternoon so I decided to load up two of the Doc's 1x12 black & tan cabs I picked up off the Buy Sell (Thanks Paul and Matt).
After listening to Paul's 2x12 cab with a V30 & G12-65, I decided to give it a try. So I loaded them up and fired up the beast and "Holy Mackeral There Andy!". I couldn't believe how fantastic it sounded. ;D
I had previously found a whole lot of joy with the Galaxie and the 4x10's loaded with golds and greenbacks but as good as the 4x10 was, the V30 and 12-65 sounded even better.
Just as I was winding up and thinking about the new glass I had sitting on the counter ready to install, in walks Al our bass player (also an old high school buddy and my inside sales manager). He comes barreling through the door like buck in heat chasing a doe looking for the source of the sounds coming from the practice space and penetrating our office for all to hear on the west end of our building.
So I started back up again to get HIS opinion on comparing the 6545 and Galaxie with the following cab's:
So without telling him what I had determined I started the demo (which I should have recorded seeing as my Zoom H4N was sitting right on the table in front of me.. I'm such a turd!)
Anyway without going into the gory details, he determined he definitely liked the Galaxie, V30/12-65 combo best; other combos were not even close. He then says "Steve that's all you need. Do you need these other amps?"
Do I need these other amps? What? OF COURSE I NEED[/color] these other amps I tell him and proceed to the grand finale. I go over to the Maz Jr stack (Blue/H30 combo) and take it off standby, step up to the EZG-50 (2x12 G12-65) and take that bad boy off standby.
I come back to good ole' Al (who's been sitting on a chair in front of me) and start the demo all over again but this time only with the chosen Galaxie and 2x12 stack. You should have seen his face when he finally got to compare the single amp tone and the complete trifecta. ;D
Yes Virginia there IS a Santa Claus!
Let's just say he get's it now and leave it at that.
So anyway there you have it, the Galaxie wins by a a nose (actually a few horse lengths).
I've got it set-up and the OD's, Boosts and Distortions adjusted to give me the tone and clean/dirt flexibility I always wanted to have with easy access. The set-up is such that I'm mostly on on Channel 1 with clean boosts, OD's and slight distortion when necessary giving me unbelievably nice full sound with sparkly highs, tight bass and great mid's. I kick it into Channel 2 when I looking for some serious crunch and mean ole' rock and roll and even then it doesn't get muddy, great even tone with note separation with sustain for weeks....AND, its super quiet.
This amp is it. What took me so long?
I have a complete new set of NOS tubes ready to go in to replace the Groove Tubes that are in there now. But I gotta tell ya, I'm holding off for a while to replace them. This amp sounds so good now, I don't want to risk the slightest chance of messin' it up.
End of report.
Shot of latest Z amp selection at the cave. Missing is my Z28 head on loan to Todd and a 2x10 JDesign cab with the Doc's 10's I have at home. Don't even ask what's behind the curtain.......

- Z-Best with a pair of Greenbacks
