Ive had most of the Z amps, many more than once. I'll say the M12 is in the top tier, up there with the Z-28, and Route 66, these three are my favorite Z's....almost in a class by themselves. And Ive had multiple Z's.....Maz18/38's reverb and NR, Ghia's, Remedy's, EZG-50's, and a KT-45, probably even missing a few.
I'll have the say the M12 is a keeper if you want the Z tone, its very straight forward, three knobs, tone is clear and crisp. Its around 12 watts so its in low watt range, but for 75% of what I play its enough, if not I have a Z-28 and a bunch of fenders.
Heres my take on the Z line in general: Small venue/bedroom (no BL): M12 (mines a 1 10, great w Z Speaker) Medium venue (BL): Z-28 Large venue (BL): Route 66 or KT-45 Forget the rest...and make your life simple. Oh and Celestion 12-65 or WGS ET-65 speakers for them.........

Interesting take, I have a Ghia and Rt 66 and looking for one more Z in a small package. Thinking either the M12 or Z28. Can't decide.

Good review. I played a M12 for about 5 min at a local store and loved it. I love my Z28 more than any Z I've played or owned. I had a Rt66 for about 2 days and it was not for me. But all were great. The M12 1-10 may just be in my future.

again for me. ive had 3 ghias, they just broke up too fast for me. the rt 66 is just a thick blues amp love it. the Z-28 is the best. the M12 is clear and crisp, good headroom for such low watts, great amp.

Smolder, looks like you got everything you need! If you had a choice between the Z28 and M12, which one would you keep?

Smolder, looks like you got everything you need! If you had a choice between the Z28 and M12, which one would you keep? I use the M12 almost exclusively for a small low volume trio I'm in. Acoustic guitar, bass and me playing lead... occasionally we are lucky enough to add a cajone drummer. With the M12 I rely almost entirely for pedals to get the grind or dirt. If I had my druthers, I'd be back playing the R66 loud... and to me the Z28 (love 6V6's) puts you in that same realm but with slightly more mid focused and less volume.

I must agree that there is really something special about the Rt 66 loud. I always thought that the Rt 66 was mid-focused. Is the Z28 even more so? I have a G12H30, which may be good for it, or the Blue that I use for my Ghia.

All that, without lacking the high end.
