just got my ghia head and z best the other day and it is a killin amp...i love the bass response, but i find that the high end is a little harsh....especially with my tele....when i hit the guitar hard i get an awesome breakup in the lows and mids, but the highs just pierce a little too much.....any suggestions to keep that tight low end but avoid that sharp high stuff.....i played my friends 2x12 mesa recto cab which is also thiele ported...it had two v30's in it and i loved the sound..nice compression on those speakers as well...they were extremely broken in.....im curious as to how the zbest would react to this combo.....

If a V30 or G12H isn't broken in it can get "honky" IMO. I got impatient and put a Eminence Private Jack in my Zbest w/ the V30 and it's definitely getting there. I'm tempted to get a Eminence Governor and ditch the V30. There's quite a few others on here who are getting into the Eminence line from what I've read. That PJ really opened up my Zbest more than the V30 or G12H and it has smooth highs- of course I play a SRZ65 which is a little on the darker side to begin with. All I can say is do your research...

I used to get great results with an Eminence Legend GB12 withg my Ghia head, as well as a G12H30. I like Vintage 30's as well, but the ones I had tried up to that point were a little harsh.

I just replaced the V30 in my Mazerati with an Eminence Red Fang, for some of the same reasons that you cited Uncle Pat. With my Tele, even using the tone control as any seasoned Tele player would do, there was a certain honky upper midrange clanginess that bothered me. I wouldn't characterize it as a harshness, but it just seemed to emphasize certain frequencies that didn't appeal to me. The Red Fang is smoother overall, very sweet and pleasing chimy tones. It also seems to compress more evenly. The Red Fang is an Alnico, and I think the V30 is a ceramic, so that may also account for the differences.
I won't be able to report on how the RF holds up at band volumes until after tonight, but so far messing with it at home, it has really changed the character of the Mazerati into one of the sweetest sounding amps I've ever owned.

Good to hear, Ig. There are a few I want to try, and that's one of them. I stumbled across a Weber 12F150 on Ebay really cheap that ended up in my Ampeg. I've often thought about taking it out to try with the Z amps, but it sounds so friggin' good in that Ampeg I just can't do it. When something's truly good, I don't want to futz with it anymore.
