Just got my first Z, a slightly used Maz 38 Sr 2 X 12. Love the amp, but I'm thinking of replacing the Eminence GB12s. Looking at the Red Fang, along with the Celestion Blue and the Weber Alnico Blue Dog. Does anyone have experience with all three, and can you compare/contrast them?

I've never played a Celestion Blue but I did replace the GreenBack that came in my Z Best with a Red Fang and it opened the cab up quite a bit. I'm probably gonna order another Fang to replace tohe G12H30. The Weber Blue Dogs are Darker than the Fangs which might work for you. I personally love the Red Fangs. Sweet Sweet Sweet. The Maz Sr can be a bright amp though, and the Red Fangs can seem bright until broken in. If I bought another Maz Sr I would try a Tonker/Swamp Thang combo. I'lll bet that would kill If you decide on thhe Fangs get them from www.avatarspeakers.com Dave has the best prices out there.

I just ordered a Red Fang for my Mazerati 1x12. I'll come back here and post my impressions after this weekend's gig. It won't get a chance to break in but hopefully I'll have something useful to report.

I wish I had a Mazerati. You are a lucky man. The Mazerati I used to play was a 1x12 and I really liked the V30 in there, but I was never able to take it out of the store so I can't really say how good a match it really was. The Red Fang is a great speaker for sure. It can be a tad bright when brand new but give it some time. I'll bet it will sound killer through the Mazerati.

To be honest, the only reason I'm getting a Red Fang is because the cool red paint job on the basket will match the red tolex on my Mazerati. Okay, I'm kidding. I've heard good things about the RF, especially in the Mazerati, and I'm hoping it will give me the smoother compression and warmth that I feel is lacking right now. I won't say the stock V30 is harsh because it really isn't, but it's a bit in your face. Of course, in all fairness the V30 isn't broken in yet either. I may play both for a while on and off and then decide which is better.

It won't get a chance to break in but hopefully I'll have something useful to report. Thought I'd follow up here. I installed the Red Fang, and wow, what a difference. Based on the quick audition in my basement, it's just what I was after. Compared to the V30 that was in it, it has a bit "softer" overall tone (presumably due to the Alnico compression vs. the ceramic magnet in the V30?), not quite so in your face, yet it has a nice sparkly high end, full, strong lows, and pleasing warm mids. I apologize for using all of these "tone cliches", but it's really hard to put this stuff into words. Anyway, I've heard this speaker compared, in rough terms, to a Celestion Blue. I've never played through one of those, but all I can say is that this is a really pleasing sounding speaker. My main guitar these days is a Tele, and I think it's accurate to say that this amp really shines with that guitar. Looking forward to hearing how the speaker/amp combo sounds with my other guitars. The full audition will be at this weekend's gig where I can crank it up a bit more and see how it sits in the mix at band volume. I really like what I hear so far, and it isn't even broken in yet!

I ended up ordering a Red Fang and a Weber Alnico Blue Dog, both 30 watt. They should be here tomorrow. I'll post a followup.

The speakers have now been in for 4 or 5 day.s, so here's my take on them. The Red Fang arrived first, so I replaced one Gb12 with it. Big difference! It really tightened up the flabby bottom end and added some of that "sparkle" stuff . A couple posts mentioned a little high end harshness until the speaker breaks in, but the Red Fang actually reduced a little icepickines for me. I pretty much just play Teles and know those shrilly highs too well. It sounded great and I immediately regretted the $170 I shelled out for the incoming Weber Blue Dog. But then that came and in it went. Holy ----!!! More sparkle, really smooth mids, tight bottom - exactly what I was looking for, pretty AC30ish. These speakers seem to like each other. And hey Ignatius, if you like the bright red of the Fang you ought to see how cool it looks next to the Blue Dog.. I haven't tried many of my ODs yet with it, but the FDII has never sounded better and my Aramat Geen Machine sounds incredible. Had a band practice tonight and even the drummer noticed the difference! I'm happy as a clam and the search is over. Of course until the sickness comes back.
