Hi folks... I'm thinking about messing w/ my zbest wiring and needed some opinions on this. I'm running an SRZ-65 into a Zbest w/ a V30 & Greenback currently wired parallel @ 4ohms. I've got more than enough low end and was wondering what changes (if any) I might hear by wiring them in series for 16ohms. I've got a 4,8, & 16 ohm jack on the back so I figure it wouldn't hurt - as well as a mini MASS that has a 4,8,& 16 jack. Any pointers would definitely help!
Gracias,
Johnny

Is there something you don't like about the tone you're getting now that you are looking to change, or are you just wanting to experiment? In general, series wiring is less focused, and parallel is more focused and punchy. The differences are VERY subtle though when compared to something such as speaker swaps, so if you're looking for drastic changes, that might be you're better bet. You can also find more on this exact topic at www.thegearpage.net if you search the amps and cabs forum. In fact, there's even discussion about series/parallel vs. parallel/series wiring when dealing with pairs of speakers in a 4x12. The topic has been discussed and explained at length, and you'll find really good detailed explanations by people with far more tech knowledge than myself. Then general conscensus seems to be that parallel is preferred, but there are obviously no hard fast rules about anything. The differences have to do with the relationship between how the speaker's cones are working I believe.

Another series vs. parallel wiring question...I read somewhere (could have been here) that AC-30's wired two 8 ohm Celestion Blues in series for a 16 ohm load, and this is a big part of their sound. I was wondering how the same approach would work for some of the Dr Z's, like the Mazerati. Any comments? Thanks.

Call me crazy but last night I rewired my zbest from 4ohms parallel to 16 ohms series and I actually think it sounds much better! This may be because my SRZ65 is more of a dark, boomy amp and needed a little more room to breathe through the speakers. I dunno but I think it sounds great. It gives everything a more 3D sound and interacts better with my guitars (feedback etc..) I would imagine that having that focused sound from a 4ohm parallel wired zbest would be beneficial for some folks but I'm glad I did it....

Some people say that at 16 ohms you're using the whole transformer and it should sound better. I believe that the lower impedance ratings use taps that don't use the whole transformer.

This looks like a good thread for these questions:
1. Does anyone know if the Z-best cabinets are typically loaded with 8ohm speakers?
2. Are they wired series or parallel?
3. Has anyone tried one loaded with two G12H speakers?

I'm gonna guess most of them are loaded w/ 8 ohm speakers wired parallel for 4 ohms. At the very least, they are all probably wired parallel at the factory. As I mentioned above though, I rewired mine series and love love it. I haven't tried 2 G12H but I had a 1 G12H & a V30 when I got mine. I found the G12H to be very boomy w/ my SRZ-65. It wasn't very foucused - I put in a Greenback (much better). I wish the GB had just a few more watts so I'm gonna experiment w/ a Private Jack when it get's here. (50W as opposed to 25W).

I want to try the stock Z-Best cabinet first with my Maz 18 combo. My amp is the single 12" version with a G12H and I really prefer it over the 2-10 model. I'm thinking that disconnecting the speaker and running the 2-12 cabinet with give me the option for a bigger sound. This will help with one of my current rock gigs. I might eventually get a Maz head, but I love my combo amp and will never part with it. It's so portable and can handle lots of different gig scenarios. Best amp I've ever owned, and I continually recommend Z's to anyone looking for something new.
