Just bought a Route 66 from a gent over on the gear page. I'm so excited for this amp I can't wait! I remember playing one in a store every day for a long while and loved it to death but could never afford it. This will be my first higher powered Dr. Z. I have owned a Carmen Ghia head and MAZ 18 2x10 combo. Both wonderful amps! But this has been my dream Z for a long time.
Couple questions:
-I have an orange 2x12 cab has anyone ran their 66 through one with good results?
-Does this amp benefit from an attenuator without losing too much of the dynamics? If so, which attenuator?
-Has anyone tried a box of rock pedal through the route 66? Does it sound good with it? I imagine it would!

Congrats on the purchase.
I don't like attenuators, jmho. Many here use them with great satisfaction.
The Route 66 loves pedals. I'm sure a Box of Rocks will benefit greatly from the Route 66 influence.

Congrats on the new amp ... Just sold mine a while back ... Don't know about the orange cab you'll just have to plug her in and let us know what you think ... You can try a different rectifier tube to lower the wattage on the amp should give it a different feel and lower the volume try a 5v4 or even a 5r4gby and see it it sounds good to you ...good luck and have fun ...

Congrats man! I'd imagine your 2x12 will sound great! Closed-back, yes?
I used a BoR when I had a RT66. Not bad, but it could get a bit dark. I liked it with less gain than when through my Fender-flavored stuff.

Tot the above post, yes the cab is closed back and the speakers are well worn in!
I also find the BOR to be dark at times. But I love that if you clean it up with the volume knobs it actually brightens up a bit! Kinda like a fuzzface!
and with the boost side engaged and the distortron it is pure destruction!

I use an Z Air Brake and it works great. To my ears, it is very transparent all the way up to the bedroom setting (4 clicks). The bedroom setting is good for what its designed to do. I have seen people complain about the bedroom setting sounding compressed, etc, but its the bedroom setting for Pete's sake, what do you expect.

+1 Airbrake con RT66; sounds and feels really good. Much better than my Weber MiniMASS.
A surprise was how good the Swart Night Light sounded at super low levels. The NL sounded even better w/ my CG.

Good to know! The wait is killing me! wont be here till next monday So would you guys go with the stand alone brake light or the airbrake? I will most likely only be using it on the 1st or 2nd click. I can crank my amps up often and wont be using it just as a bedroom amp. Not what it's meant for imo!

If money is not an issue, I would go with the Airbrake. Its built like a tank. The Brake Lite is probably best suited for use in combo amps. People often comment about how they only go up 2 clicks before they notice a loss in transparency. Either one will work.

So I finally got the amp....MY GOD!!! My favorite Z so far! I have had a couple others and sold them and don't know why because nothing has as much big bass response yet has the ability to cut and punch like Dr. Z amps! The route 66 is possibly the biggest thickest sounding amp I have ever played and when everyone talked about it taking pedals well I had no idea! I ran a BOR through it and it literally sounded and felt like it was part of the amp. I have also never heard my deja-vibe sound as good and thick. I run the amp through a closed back orange cab. with this combination and the amp really cranked with a boost from the boost side of my BOR the amp can give me any sounds I want from clean blues, to classic rock, to hard rock, and even some metal tones..... ...Weirdly enough I wasn't that far off from an Adam Jones' (Tool) earlier tone when I cranked the amp and bass and treble and used the clean boost. the amp is as dynamic and has all the clean up ability I have come to know and love about Z amps. Wherever you are Doc thanks for making among the very best of amps (yes, even including the highly sought after vintage amps) ever!!!!

Interesting. Guess I only know the way it sounds with the 5AR4. I still love it though!! Never tried the newer version....Mine seems loud as hell though! I've owned far higher wattage amps that aren't as loud

Man, I wish I could have kept my Route, but if I did I wouldn't have my M12. I used a brake lite with it usually on the 2nd click and it didn't effect the amp at all in a negative way. BTW, my favourite pedal with the route was a Diamond Boost/EQ. Supper simple pedal, Id just boost it a bit, crank up the mids...rock and roll tone heaven.
