So it has been three weeks since I decided to "downsize" my Maz 18 NR head to a Maz 8 head. I figured I would post a few of of the more notable differences for those considering the transition.
Volume: In Pentode mode, I would estimate that the Maz 8 Has about 60% of the perceived volume of the 18 NR. I am able to set the MV and Vol at noon without waking the dead. I estimate that Triode mode is 30% of the perceived volume of the 18. Overall I am very pleased with the volume drop between the 8 and 18 as this was my primary purpose for the switch.
TMB: The 8 comes across as a brighter amp (IMHO) and produces noticeably less bass than the 18. Of course there is plenty on tap, but i find myself cranking the bass past 3 O'clock, while pulling back on the treble. Consider this when selecting your speaker(s). The 8 sounds down right amazing through an Celestion Alnico Blue.
EQ Bypass: I absolutely LOVE the EQ bypass on the 8. LOVE IT. I rarely used it on 18 because it sounded rather muffled. Almost as if there was a blanket over the amp. Not the case the with 8. Maybe the overall brighter quality of the 8 helps.
There are plenty more differences than these, but this just what stands out after a few weeks.

Glad you like it. It is a very versatile amp. Great as part of a 2 amp rig too.

Good observations and I totally agree.
Though I don't have TMB on my 18, so I can't compare there.
A dual rig, AB/Y the 8 for dirt and the bypass, with the 18 for cleans. I think that this could be a pretty winning combo. I'm going to have to pick up a switcher to give this a shot.

I think when OP said TMB, he meant the treble/mid/bass controls. I'll agree the 8 has far less bass than the 18; mine is also always set around 3 o'clock, and treble down.

When I refer to a dual rig I mean both on all the time:)

What are you pairing yours up with Eric?
I'm not gigging now and as much as I like it solo, that's the intent I had when I bought it.

If you say less bass, this somehow worries me. I ordered a Maz 8 two days ago, after missing my Maz 18 since August (I sold my Maz 18, worst thing I did in my life). And I always loved that thick 'thump' the Maz 18 gave me and hoped it would be there with the Maz 8 too. I will be running the Amp through a Dr Z Best Cab. So will you please tell me, that there still is that 'thump', will ya?

I suppose that could be item 4 of my OP: The Maz 8 is not as percussive (is that an adjective?) as the Maz 18. Not quite as thumpy, which I admittedly miss sometimes, but still plenty of umpf. I am still experimenting, but I find using the lo input very helpful in getting more thump in the sound while turning the MV and Vol up.
Any of the seasoned Maz 8 users able to opine on how to get that 18 thump out of the 8?

Even though I traded my 8 off...The maz 8 didn't have the thump with a celestion blue that the maz 18 has. The Maz 8 had plenty of thump with a G12H30 speaker. Much more so than with the Blue. I'm guessing using a head thru a Z-best would have plenty of thump.

You will have plenty of bass with the Maz 8 through a Z Best! I've been pairing the MAZ 8 with the Ghia and with the Z-28 at the studio.
It's great as a second amp. It doesn't take much from the 2nd to get a lot 'more' overall.

Had the 8 and loved it at home. It was just not powerful enough for me in gigging situations. I ended up getting the 18 and it just works much better for me.

Just got the 8. Absolutely love it! I have both it and the 18NR. I can get my favorite sound out of both but can also go into different territory with each. I have blues in both. I love the Maz with a blue.

When you guys say the 8 doesn't have the low end that the 18 has I have to ask this question. Is it because you are hearing a lower volume from the 8 and the way the ear perceives that is causing the difference? If you heard both amps at the same volume would the low end be more similar? I'm interested in this because I love my 18 but I'm thinking about getting an 8 so I don't have to gig with an attenuator. I don't care for them at all. Has anyone played this amp into a sealed cabinet?

Its because its single el 84 and was the main reason I went with the 18 studio, aside from not having a enough juice (w/8) when you run into srv clone, which is pretty much the only reason...oh and I am not using attenuator...and wont I guess.Didnt care for it as much as I wanted to like...I never had enough headroom.
I guess all subjective for what your personal needs are.

Is the Maz 8 with a 1/12 cab loud enough to play clean with a band? I.e., I use my Maz 18 as a clean amp and use pedals for boost and overdrive. It is more than loud enough for practice with a band. Can the Maz 8 do the same?

Can the Maz 8 do the same? I think it can. Most of my gigs are small. It's the perfect size wattage wise. I even got told it was too loud over my bass players 480 watt rig.
