Buddy - Thanks for the response regarding the Brown Deluxe. That's what I figured....probably hype. But, it's gotta make you feel good that someone out there was saying..."yeah dude, like, this amp actually belonged to Buddy W." I've been playing that little thing lately for our bar gigs instead of my Z's. I know....my bad. The other guitar player in the band has a Brown Super, and the two amps look so cool sitting next to each other....in front of the pool table no less. Of course, he's on 3-4 and I'm on 8 with my Deluxe. Weez be rockin. Take care, man, and I'll stop by to say hi if you come through here again. If you need to borrow a Z amp or cab, lemme know.

Plug into the normal channel of that Brown Super and tell me it doesn't sound like a Z28!

Billy - I'm playing the "bar" manana, so I'll get a chance to do what you suggest. That Super is a really killer amp, but I'm pretty happy with the Deluxe. It doesn't move as much air, but it's still a good match along side the Super. I'm going to play my Maz Jr sometime this summer (it's a 2x10 combo) and see how it goes next to the Super. I should be able to match up pretty well.

Hey BW. My wife & daughter are going to be in NYC and are coming to see you with Mayall at B.B. King's club. Unfortunately, I can't be there, but I was wondering if they might be able to get your autograph before or after the show. If so, what show would be the best for you to do this, first or second? They are staying up there for two months while my daughter does a summer camp at Julliard for voice & dance. They're also going to see Mark Knopfler in June at Radio City Music Hall. I'm going to visit for a week over the 4th of July and will see Les Paul at the Iridium Club at 51st and Broadway. He's there every Monday night and is very close to B.B. King's at 42nd. Had I known you were going to be in NYC, I would have booked my flight accordingly. Oh well...... We were all sitting around partying on Memorial Day, watching youy smoke on the Mayall Birthday CD. Great playing!!!!!

Buddy, just got off the phone with Scott Lentz. Seems like a great guy and definitely a character! I'm in serious consideration for the one with block inlays, two P-90s and Gretsch orange. Just like the one in that video clip of you playing at an Arlington show. I wanted to ask you how you liked that guitar?
The pickups sound great, clear for P-90s. How do you think the bridge pickup sounds as opposed to the b-kaster bridge pickup? A little darker with more mids? That's what I want.
How do you like the 9.5" radius fingerboard? Can you get low action and not zing out on a bend?
Scott described the soft-vee neck as being pretty thick, which I would like. I don't care for a standard Fender neck thickness. Is that the way it feels to you?
Scott doesn't do stainless frets so how long can you go between dress and polish?
I appreciate you taking the time to help me on this!

Scott, Ian and Scotty are great guys and run a first class operation. If I'm not mistaken, the orange guitar you're talking about was up for sale again a while back, don't know if it still is. Probably pretty pricey though, with all the fancy inlay and all. Not a 'stock' model by any means. The neck is about my favorite feature of my Lentz guitars. Nice and comfy, BIG but not too big, maybe even a little bit of a soft 'v', but just barely perceptible. I'm not the guy to ask about neck radius, if it feels good to me I like it and that's about all I can attest to. It doesn't 'fret out' anywhere on the neck when you bend a note. I haven't had much playing time on the 2 L-90 model other than the video clip you mentioned, but I will say its a little less tele-like than mine, although nice and bright on the bridge pickup and the 2 pickups blend beautifully warm with the independent volume controls, especially with a cleaner amp. Not unlike a LP Special, I guess, maybe with a little less low end due to the ash vs. mahogany on the LP. I have had a little trouble with 60 HZ hum in some of the places I play and sometimes when recording, but that's gonna happen w/ single coils. You have to 'face Mecca' and find the quiet spot. But some of the joints I play have about 25 neon beer signs and were wired by the barback on his day off. There isn't a hum cancelling mode on the HSL setup, while my T style is hum cancelling in the middle position. Again, just because of the seperate volumes. As far as fret wear, I'd like to try the stainless frets--on somebody else's guitar! I hear they make the guitar sound a little brighter, but for no fret jobs ever, I think I could turn the treble down a bit and work around it. Hope that's clear as mud...

Thanks Buddy. You're the only guy I know with much time on a Lentz. The orange guitar is $3,000 + $135 for the case. To me that's not bad because a Grosh can run that much. I really like the two volumes and am considering a phase switch for a little T-Bone Walkerish kind of sound. Scott says the P-90s are hum cancelling in the middle. I've spent too much money recently on a new TV system and other things but I'm GASing bad for that orange Lentz. I think I'll sell my older Tom Anderson Hollow T. That would get me part way there. Thanks for being a bro!

You are most welcome sir. I really like all 3 of mine. I've just about quit taking my old mutt strat on the road, and really don't miss it all that much. I used a 335 some on this new bunch of Freddie King tunes we just recorded, 'cause I wanted to get a little closer to his tone, but we all know that's impossible. The Lentz HSL is also on every track, playing either rhythm or lead. Used my Senior and a KT45 for all of it thru a Swamp Thang, except for one where we used a greenback. If I ever get any mp3's for the mix I'll post one.

KT45 and a Swamp Thang should do the Freddie King thing purty good. A D130 probably would've nailed it. And finger picks, and "Sherman, set the way-back machine for 1971".........

Sure thing, Mr Peabody! Well, I tried the metal fingerpick/plastic thumbpick thang...a little embarrasing fer a hack like me. But it did sorta help me get in that zone a little. I didn't have a JBL, but I DID have the Swamp Thang, which is sorta like a JBL w/ a paper dust cover. Not quite as high endy, but man is it loud. Our engineer said it hurt his ears a little, hope it sounds OK! With the Z's LIVE it was just like --whoa!--a bit much. So I'm back on the Celestion g12h100 for the Senior. (with a beam blocker) MIGHT try the Swamp again this fall in England w/ my Ghia head to keep the stage level down a little, some of the venues we do over there are old theaters that are are really live rooms. And the ghia is still pretty loud with the Swamp thang, just not as 'big' and 'present' as it is with the Senior. But I'll put it back in my 112 Zcab and pay extra to take it w/ me so I won't have to play thru somebody's old blown Marshall 2X12 or something. And Bill, it should be out on Eagle Records in the spring of '07. (But maybe we can hear it before then, hope so anyway!)

Glad to hear that a new CD is coming out. And thanks for the Lentz info.
I ordered my Lentz HSL guitar a while ago. It should arrive before the fall comes. We have planned to do some recordings and I´d like to use it.
In future I´ll invest on DRZ amp. So far I´ll have to manage with Mesa Maverick or 7ender Bandmaster "home" custom amp with two Celestion G12H100.
I gave my old Marshall JMP 2x12 amp to my son. He´s 13. Hope he is able to move it... ;^)
Buddy. I´m interested to know, how does beam blocker effect on the sound?

I really can't tell much difference from where I stand, Tapsa. The main reason I bought one is that my amp is usually at ear level with the first row of (old) people;^) Don't wan't to hurt anybody! I'll take it to England and see how it works out. I might try my Carmen Ghia to keep the level down a little. Let us know when your guitar arrives!

Ordered my orange Lentz DL90 today. Deposit check is in the mail! It's Buddy's fault! What the beam blockers do won't knock you over but it's subtle and nice. To me it's like the cone of dispersion just got more spherical, I like it a lot.

I wish I could see Les Paul at Iridium, seems like the stars never align for that when we roll through town.. What a fabulous opportunity for your daughter. Be sure to tell them to come say Hi, I'll be the guy that doesn't look like he's from New York.

King's on Friday. I was driving home from a gig on Kiawa Island, SC at about 10:00 PM when they called me after your show. They just raved about what a great time they had and what a cool guy you are. All my daughter can talk about is how you let her strap on your guitar........I'll be hearing about that for years to come! Was that your Lentz? They said the show, and especially your playing & singing, was amazing. I'm sorry I couldn't make it up to NYC again this summer to see your show, but I already over spent when I was up there over the 4th of July. I didn't get to see Les Paul at the Iridium, but I did see Lee Ritenour at the Blue Note. Anyway, thanks again BW......you da man! ;D Steve BTW....I saw some clips Rich (richeray) posted of that show. I loved your take on "Hide Away".......absolutely smokin' dude!

Thanks Steve, enjoyed meeting everbody and can't get over what a great opportunity your baby girl is enjoying. I have a 12 year old that would LOVE to be in her shoes. She's done some local theater and I think she's been bitten by the bug. (Yikes! Another 'creative person' in the family! What'll we do NOW?) Billy, Scott Lentz Jr (aka Scotty) came to a gig we did at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA (a little north of San Diego) and happened to notice that I had a reissue neck on my ol' mutt '63 strat. (Good Eyes!) He said, "You should let my dad build you a neck for your guitar." I said, "Well, I like the one I have, I'm used to it, been playing it quite awhile. He went on to describe how Scott's work was far superior to what was coming out of that other California guitar concern, and how everything they did was built pretty much one at a time. I was 'definitely' interested. Later, my pal Barney Roach took me over to the Lentz Lab in San Marcos and we spent the afternoon talking, laughing, goin' out for fish tacos and playin' a little. It just sorta went from there, first with a new neck, then the maple neck sunburst 'S' style that I played on the 70th Birthday Concert dvd, to the first HSL with a 'T' setup and finally to the one I'm playing now, the HSL w/ an L-90 in the neck and the bkaster in the bridge. I love 'em all and pretty much decided to leave the old strat at the house fer awhile.

Good reading. I/we appreciate the little story. If you hadn't liked the neck you wouldn't have been back for more. To me that's a good endoesement. I have a couple from that other california guitar concern and can't wait to see Scott's work in my grimey little fingers. I've seen a few Grosh's and they look great but not a fan of the altered body shapes. They are also just as much money. Scott's looks more balanced to my eye. I like the fact that Scott designs his own pickups too. Thanks BW!

Buddy,
A quick question....
Some folks were asking about EL84 tube life. I told them that a change was noticed when we changed out yours but I do not know how much time the prior set had on them.
Thanks
Myles

Couldn't say exactly Myles, but it hadn't been TOO long since I changed 'em. I usually put a new set in at the beginning of a tour. But we did notice a difference with the new set and guys, Myles deposited the old set in the 'circular file'.

As a side note, if the tubes are not all that bad that come out of an amp I will usually just have the player keep them as an emergency back up set. Then again, if I have enough new ones on hand I will generally give players of Buddy's caliber a fresh backup set also.
