Re: Tuning down a 1/2 step: I can't do it. When my hands do one thing and my ears hear another thing it messes me up. It's like I need a brain capo. I like the sound though when I hear other people doing it. It's expansive, bluesy and makes for great vibrato.

It actually feels out of sync for some reason. Love the 'brain capo' analogy Oldster!

Tas, wish we could come over today, but seems like we can't get enough shows booked together to make the long, expensive flight worthwhile. Last time we were only over for 7 shows in 7 days. Great venues, though. Probably gettin' nice and hot down there now, eh?

I wish I understood some of this Texan dialect... Well the first thing I would recommend Dave is the advice in the classic old line: "Well I weren't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could" In all seriousness I personally consider Texas the center of the musical universe! From Bob Wills elevating Western Swing and laying down the Texas tradition of amalgamating diverse musical genres (a tradition that holds true today!), on down through all the great blues pioneers (say Hop Wilson and a tons of others!) and Texas country (say Ernest Tubb and 'ol Hoss and tons of others). Through the great singer-songwriter/outlaw/cosmic cowboy tradition (which I think is now at a new apex) to all those years of Austin City Limits (and now Dallas/Plano's KHYI- FM!), and "the friendliest people and the prettiest women you've ever seen". To me it is all just very special! To bring this back to a BW question... BW were you born in TX? Who are your major Texas music influences? Patrick

Dave, as far as I know, I'll be there! Nobody's kicked me outa the nest as of this writing. Hope so, the house payment's due again. Seems like it happens EVERY month. Been right here all my life, Pat... Rev Gibbons was and IS a big influence, Freddie King, Johnny Winter, Bugs Henderson, John Nitzinger, Bloodrock's Lee Pickens, BB, Albert, Allman Bros. and just about every country artist that played either Cowtown Jamboree or Big 'D' Jamboree (local TV shows in the 60's) I'd like to say that Roy Nichols, Phil Baugh and Eldon Shamblin were influences, but I never could figger any of that stuff out to my (or anybody else's) satisfaction..we continue to evolve, and 'gather our karma' w/o blowing up, hopefully ;^)

Not Bad! Ghia> Z 1X12 ("Swamp Thang" loaded and generously supplied to me by bluzsteel) with an old junky Microverb to wet it down a bit. Gonna try the same rig with an old Boss delay tonight instead, the micro made the whole rig sound a little too middy, I guess due to the preamp in it. I like it simple! Jes' want a little 'room' around the note. I'd go bareback, but it sounds so much better to have it a little 'verby on some of the cleaner stuff.

Holy crap. Just been kinda' following this thread every now and then, then this name pops up. I haven't heard Lee Pickens' name mentioned in about 30 years... All of my old Bloodrock vinyl got ripped off many years ago, but this sort of jumped out at me when I saw it.

We'll be at the 100 Club on April 3 if I'm not mistaken, its the last stop before Heathrow/Gatwick at the end of a tour d' Fwahhhnce...don't know about the other 2 days, sounds like a good 'un! Uncle Pat, Bloodrock are Ft Worth homeboys. They actually reformed and did a show (minus drummer Rick Cobb) last year to offset keyboardist Stevie Hill's medical bills. No insurance, of course. Musician. I played with Lee and Charlie Bassham, drummer for the Lee Pickens Group a while back at a smoky little joint here in Cowtown. Fun gig!

I bet it was a fun gig! I had to do a little websearching after reading that name, just to jar the ol' gray matter after so many years and listen to a few soundclips. I hadn't realized that they were Texans as well. Must be somethin' in the water down there...

What water? I thought they just had Texas Tea! I guess they must have some to grow them "Desert Roses"! That's what we've been saying ...we were about 13 or 14 inches short on our average rainfall last year & haven't had any yet this year...you'd think we were in California with all the "wildfires" we've been having

One more question (and thanks for answerin the others) buddy- i read a while ago that your 63 strat has a neck thats not the original and a set of seymour duncan pickups. I was wondering what set it is? Thanks, and see you on the 3rd April Nick

It's (not so) slowly becoming a new guitar, Nick. I've been playing Scott Lentz guitars (www.lentzguitar.com) for quite a while now, and Scott built the neck that's currently on that old Static-Catcher. Big, chunky Louisville Slugger profile, it really brought that old warclub to life! Sounds better than it ever has, 'cept for it needs a fret job REAL bad. I haven't been playing it much, been relyin' mainly on that new Lentz model in Fiesta Red. The neck pickup is original, the middle is a Duncan SSL-1 RWRP and the bridge is SSL-1. Nothin' fancy, just stuff that does what its supposed to. The REAL mojo on that one is Billy Gibbons' self-drawn charicature and autograph on the back o' the headstock. Wouldn't trade it for 10 mortgage payments (not THIS month anyway...;^) seeya in Oxford Street in April, Lord willin' an' the creek don't rise...
