Okay, I've figured out who BW is! I think it's great that you take the time to participate in this forum. I know your reputation but I'm not familiar with your music. Which CD would you suggest I get as your best work or most representative of your playing? Thank you. OldsterEven a bigger LOL!!! :-)

Pleased to make your acquaintance Oldster, when I'm not on the road w/ my 'vacationing' boss, I can usually be found doing odd jobs around either Zane's or Bluzsteel's crib. They let me borrow their gear 'cause mine's usually in the hockshop. And I just found out my NYE gig is cancelled due to no Lick'er license at the dump--er...skull orchard..err..... drinking and dining establishment at which I was engaged to appear. Shoulda Coulda Woulda paid dem dang union dues, wouldn't that've been a gas? The 70th 'Bidet' Concert is always available on Amazon.com if its not on johnmayall.com, The last one I BOUGHT (Thanks Record Label!) came from Best Buy. They usually have one--and I mean ONE-- in stock. My wife was REAL hot at me for givin' the last copy we had away (But BABY--I GAVE it to BILLY GIBBONS!) I like "Spinning Coin" on Silvertone and also "Blues For the Lost Days" in addition to the ones all our gentlemanly friends have mentioned. OK, Somebody kick this dang soapbox out from under me quick!

Apparently if you don't put a big grinning smiley on everything it goes right by some people. Oldster, Yeah, sure, right, you knew, huh? I'll bet you didn't even know that Barry White played the guitar. kc

Hey Buddy, I meant to ask you in C'ville the other night :-)...back about 8 or so years ago you and JM played an outdoor concert in downtown Richmond, just prior to your Z days. Seems like there was a tiny Fender amp behind you, although it sounded huge. Were you using Fenders in the early days with JM? Deluxes? Memories can be tricky ya know

Hey BW, looks like you have a real hectic European schedule coming up, starting in March 06?
How do you prepare for being on the road for so long overseas, and being away from home (US)?
Any chance at you doing a solo disk at all in the mean time?

We LIVE for (and BY) those tours. Just put yer head down and hit it, don't quit it. I'll NEVER work with anybody again that LOVES to work as much as Mr. Mayall (That is when we DO work;^) Just load up a suitcase, grab the ol' Lentz and Senior head and try to stay out of the croissants every morning. I'd love to do a record, but it jes' ain't happenin' as of yet. Guess I better hurry 'fore dat window closes up on me. Madison, I remember that Richmond gig, kind of in a courtyard at a mall, or a park...and we opened for the Yellowjackets (yikes!) I'm sure I had my MAZ Studio Deluxe then, the first one I had. (and STILL have! Used it tonight!) I used to have a red-knob twin on John'd rider and used a Rat or TS-9 with it, but that would have only been for a one off fly gig or something where I'd get the hairy eyeball for bringin' an amp w/ me.

You've a good memory BW...yes, we had gone to see the Yellowjackets and the Bluesbreakers stole the show. So that was the Studio Deluxe? I just remember it looking small and sounding enormous!

Buddy, I've looked for this and can't find it anywhere in the forum, but I'm curious as to what strings you use, and what gauge you like. Thanks

What Zane said. The set is called XL115 'Jazz/Rock. You'll immediately know more big chords, including the G#Festered13 and Bb demolished. This is really a great all-purpose set of strangs. I tried to go back to .010's a while back but they jes' dont 'sang' to me anymore. A little more taxing on the ol' digits, but it pays off in tone and tuning stability if ya ask me. My bud Johnnie Red quit using .011's because they made his hand ache. I think he's jes' gittin' OLD, like me.

Yeah last time I saw Johnnie Red play he was wearing what looked like a carpal tunnel hand/wrist brace... guess I should start using them strings I always wanted to be able to play a G#Festered13 ;^)

"great all-purpose set of strangs".... "pays off in tone and tuning stability if ya ask me..." DITTO!! absolutely....been using them since the early 90's... seem to make my strats definitely stay in tune better.... BW....just wondering...do you tune down a half step...I didn't used to but I do now and that seems to help the ole hands a bit....still have to be careful when I pick up somebody else's geetar though.....Once I was gonna jam with a friend of mine at a gig, picked up his strat and the 1st time I went to bend a note POW....I just broke his high E strang right off....ooops.....felt bad about that

I never have been in a situation where everybody tuned down. It's a help for vocals, 'cause all the notes are a 'half step easier' to hit. But its weird for the keyboard player (who are as a rule a little weird anyway;^) John Mayall writes a lot in keys like Eb, especially if he knows we're going to have a horn overdub on the track, so if the tune calls for it (like needing 'open' sounding chords with open strings) I'll tune down for the track and play a half step down (in 440) when we play it live. Doesn't sound the same, though.

Tuning down is also a good way to piss off an unprepared harp player

BW, how long did it take to get use to those 11's or did you always play them...I may give it a try...may not be too bad with those 6100 rail road tracks on my necks!....I switched to 10s about 5 years ago and did notice a tone difference from the 9's

" how long did it take to get use to those 11's " Hey bluesman...I don't mean to hijack BW's answer but I gotta tell ya....I've been using 11's since around 1990 on all my strats ( in standard tuning through the 90's and down a 1/2 step for the last few years) and I can't play 10's anymore...too slinky and big difference in tone.. when I wrote " POW....I just broke his high E strang right off....ooops" in the earlier reply.... didn't mean too but his guitar had 10's on it and I was used to playin 11's in standard tuning.....they were probably not a fresh set either it didn't take me long AT ALL to get used to 11's though.....get a good guitar tech to set your strat up to play 11's and it'll stay in tune better than ever too! ....if you tune down a 1/2 step it's not much different than 10's feel wise but a little bigger tone....if you play standard tuning then just a little more getting used to but WORTH it IMHO... nothing wrong with 9's or 10's but I Highly reccomend tryin 11's out...

I sure like 'em. Been using the D'Addario XL115 set for YEARS. I'm tempted to put 10's on every now and then, (usually after I work w/ a great country picker that does all the cool tele bends) but I always miss something in the sound when I do. You're right about the harp players, Lefty!;^)

I used 11's for years, and just went back to 10's , only thing I like better about em is the steel guitar stuff, and I think a tele rings alittle better ...........your up pretty early Bud! I know you cant sleep cause I got your Ghia hostage
